Extract Line Art from Colored Paper in GIMP
Extracting clean line art from drawings on toned or colored paper is straightforward in GIMP using the Color Erase blend mode. This guide covers how to sample the background paper tone, apply the blend mode to convert that specific color into transparency, and preserve pure, isolated linework ready for digital coloring.
Step 1: Prepare the Image and Add an Alpha Channel
- Open your scanned drawing in GIMP via File > Open.
- Locate the Layers panel on the right side of the workspace.
- Right-click your image layer and select Add Alpha Channel. If the option is grayed out, the layer already supports transparency.
Step 2: Sample the Paper Color
- Select the Color Picker Tool from the toolbox (or press O on your keyboard).
- In the Tool Options dock, set the Sample Average radius to around 3 to 5 pixels to avoid picking up single-pixel noise or paper grain.
- Click on a blank area of the colored paper background that represents the average hue of the page. This sets your active foreground color to the paper's exact shade.
Step 3: Create and Fill a Color Erase Layer
- In the Layers panel, click the Create a new layer icon at the bottom.
- Ensure the new layer is positioned directly above your original artwork layer.
- Select the Bucket Fill Tool (or press Shift + B).
- Fill the entire new layer with the sampled foreground color. Your image will temporarily be covered by a solid block of color.
Step 4: Apply the Color Erase Blend Mode
- Ensure the solid color layer is selected in the Layers panel.
- Click the Mode dropdown menu at the top of the Layers panel (set to "Normal" by default).
- Scroll through the blend modes and select Color Erase.
The solid color layer will instantly subtract its color values from the underlying artwork, turning the colored paper transparent while keeping darker pencil or ink strokes intact.
Step 5: Merge and Clean Up
- Right-click the top layer (set to Color Erase) and select Merge Down. The transparency is now permanently applied to your line art layer.
- If faint paper texture remains, go to Colors > Levels or Colors > Curves.
- Adjust the black and white point sliders to darken your line art and push any semi-transparent residue completely to full transparency.
