Enlarge and Sharpen Images in GIMP Resynthesizer

This guide explains how to upscale low-resolution photographs using the "Enlarge & Sharpen" feature powered by the third-party Resynthesizer plugin in GIMP. Unlike standard scaling methods like bicubic or Lanczos interpolation that often blur details, Resynthesizer uses texture-synthesis algorithms to intelligently invent plausible pixels, resulting in crisper edges and realistic textures when increasing image resolution.

Step 1: Install the Resynthesizer Plugin

Before using the feature, the Resynthesizer plugin and its associated Python scripts must be installed in GIMP.

  1. Download the Resynthesizer plugin package compatible with your operating system (Linux users can often install it via package managers under gimp-resynthesizer).
  2. Extract the files and copy the binary (resynthesizer) and Python scripts (smart-enlarge.py, etc.) into your GIMP user profile folder:
    • Windows: C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\plug-ins
    • Linux: ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins
  3. Restart GIMP to register the new scripts.

Step 2: Open and Prepare Your Photograph

  1. Launch GIMP and go to File > Open to select your low-resolution photograph.
  2. If the photo has heavy JPEG compression artifacts or noise, apply a light noise reduction first via Filters > Enhance > Noise Reduction, as Resynthesizer will attempt to synthesize and amplify existing artifacts.

Step 3: Run Enlarge & Sharpen

  1. Navigate to the top menu and select Filters > Enhance > Enlarge & sharpen... (Note: Depending on your plugin version, it may appear as Smart enlarge...).
  2. Configure the parameters in the dialog box:
    • Ratio: Enter the scaling factor (e.g., 2.0 to double the dimensions). It is generally best to work in moderate steps (between 1.5 and 2.5) to avoid unnatural-looking textures.
    • Sharpness: Adjust the sharpness slider. A setting around 0.5 to 1.0 works well for general photography; higher values increase contrast along edges but can introduce halos.
    • Texture generation controls: Leave standard sampling options at their defaults unless specific patterns require wider neighborhood sampling.
  3. Click OK to execute the process. Resynthesizer is computationally intensive, so processing may take from several seconds to a few minutes depending on the target resolution and CPU speed.

Step 4: Review and Finalize

  1. Zoom to 100% (View > Zoom > 1:1) to inspect the newly synthesized details around edges, skin, and backgrounds.
  2. If the result appears overly textured or harsh, lower the opacity of the newly enlarged layer against a traditionally scaled layer (using Image > Scale Image with NoHalo interpolation) to blend the sharpness naturally.
  3. Export the finished image via File > Export As in your desired high-resolution format (such as PNG or high-quality JPEG).
