Distribute Layers Evenly in GIMP
Distributing layers evenly in GIMP is an essential technique for creating balanced compositions, grids, and clean graphic layouts. This guide explains how to use GIMP's built-in Align tool to automatically space multiple layers horizontally or vertically across your canvas with precision.
Step 1: Select the Align Tool
- Open your project containing the layers you want to space out.
- Select the Align Tool from the Toolbox (or press the shortcut key Q).
Step 2: Set the Reference Point
Look at the Tool Options panel on the left or right side of your workspace:
- Locate the Relative to: dropdown menu.
- Select Image to distribute layers across the entire canvas. Alternatively, choose First item or Selection depending on the boundary you want to use.
Step 3: Select the Target Layers
- Click on the first layer on the canvas. Small square handles will appear at its corners to indicate it is selected.
- Hold down the Shift key and click on every other layer you wish to include in the distribution.
Step 4: Distribute the Layers
Under the Distribute section in the Tool Options panel, choose how you want the spacing calculated:
- Horizontal Distribution:
- Distribute left edges of targets: Spaces layers based on their left borders.
- Distribute horizontal centers of targets: Spaces layers evenly based on their center points.
- Distribute right edges of targets: Spaces layers based on their right borders.
- Vertical Distribution:
- Distribute top edges of targets: Spaces layers based on their top borders.
- Distribute vertical centers of targets: Spaces layers evenly based on their center points.
- Distribute bottom edges of targets: Spaces layers based on their bottom borders.
Step 5: Adjust Offset (Optional)
If you want a specific pixel distance between elements rather than an automatic division across the canvas:
- Enter a pixel value in the Offset box next to the distribution buttons.
- Click the desired distribution icon to apply the spacing with the set offset.
