Desaturate by Luminance (Rec. 709) in GIMP

This guide explains how to convert color images to grayscale in GIMP using the Desaturate tool's Luminance method. By utilizing the ITU-R Rec. 709 standard, this technique calculates the perceived brightness of colors to match human visual perception, creating a more naturally balanced black-and-white conversion compared to standard averaging methods.

Step 1: Open the Image

  1. Launch GIMP.
  2. Go to File > Open and select the color image you want to process.
  3. If working with a multi-layered project, select the specific layer you want to desaturate in the Layers dialog.

Step 2: Open the Desaturate Tool

  1. In the top menu, click on Colors.
  2. Hover over or click on Desaturate.
  3. Select Desaturate... from the submenu to open the configuration dialog.

Step 3: Select the Luminance Mode

Inside the Desaturate dialog window, you will see a dropdown list labeled Mode.

  1. Click the Mode dropdown menu.
  2. Select Luminance.

Understanding the Calculation

The Luminance mode applies the ITU-R Rec. 709 coefficients to linear RGB values:

  • Red: 21.26% (0.2126)
  • Green: 71.52% (0.7152)
  • Blue: 7.22% (0.0722)

Human eyes are most sensitive to green light and least sensitive to blue light. By weighting green heavily and blue lightly, the Luminance option matches real-world human eye perception far better than the Lightness (HSL) or Average (HSI Intensity) modes.

(Note: Do not confuse Luminance with Luma. The Luma option uses the same Rec. 709 coefficients but applies them to non-linear gamma-corrected values, whereas Luminance operates on linearized light values).

Step 4: Apply and Confirm

  1. Ensure the Preview checkbox is ticked to verify the result on the canvas.
  2. Click OK to permanently apply the grayscale calculation to the active layer.
