Create Starfields in GIMP with Brush Dynamics
This guide explains how to configure custom brush dynamics in GIMP to generate stylized, scattered starfields efficiently. By linking the random input parameter to size, angle, and opacity, you can paint vast fields of unique, naturally dispersed stars with single brush strokes instead of placing each star manually.
Step 1: Create a New Brush Dynamic
- Open GIMP and select the Paintbrush Tool
(
P). - Open the Paint Dynamics panel by navigating to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paint Dynamics.
- In the lower right corner of the Paint Dynamics dialog, click the Create a new dynamics button (the paper icon).
- A new window titled Paint Dynamics Editor will
open. Rename the dynamic at the top to something recognizable, such as
Starfield Generator.
Step 2: Configure the Dynamics Matrix
The Dynamics Editor contains a grid where rows represent brush properties (outputs) and columns represent triggers (inputs). To randomize the appearance of each star as you paint:
- Locate the Random column in the matrix.
- Check the box at the intersection of Opacity and Random. This causes individual stars to vary between faint flickers and bright bursts.
- Check the box at the intersection of Size and Random. This introduces depth by mixing microscopic distant stars with larger foreground stars.
- Check the box at the intersection of Angle and Random. This rotates star flares or non-circular shapes so they do not all align in the same direction.
Close the Dynamics Editor. Your new preset is automatically saved in your dynamics library.
Step 3: Configure Brush and Tool Options
To ensure individual stars do not clump together into a continuous line, adjust the brush spacing and scatter in the Tool Options panel:
- Select a Brush: Choose an appropriate brush tip. For sharp, stylized stars, select a 4-point star brush or a cross-spark brush. For soft, distant stars, a basic round brush with hardness set around 75% works best.
- Increase Spacing: Under the brush selector in Tool Options, expand the brush properties and increase Spacing to at least 150% to 300%. This forces GIMP to leave gaps between stamps, preventing stars from overlapping heavily.
- Enable Dynamics: Ensure your newly created
Starfield Generatorpreset is selected in the Dynamics dropdown. - Enable Jitter: Check the Apply Jitter option in Tool Options and set the slider between 1.5 and 3.0. Jitter scatters the stars outward from the center of your stroke, giving the cluster a natural cosmic spread.
Step 4: Paint the Starfield
- Create a new layer with a black or deep-space gradient background.
- Set your foreground color to white, pale cyan, or soft gold.
- Lightly drag your cursor across the canvas. GIMP will scatter stars along the path, automatically applying independent rotations, dimensions, and transparency levels to every star stamped.
