Convert Selection to Path with Custom Tolerance in GIMP

Converting an active pixel selection into a vector path in GIMP allows for smooth, scalable, and editable vector contours. While the standard menu command automatically converts selections using default values, accessing GIMP's advanced conversion options enables you to adjust the error tolerance, giving you control over anchor point density and curve fidelity. The following steps outline how to access the advanced conversion dialog and apply a custom error threshold to your selection.

1. Create Your Active Selection

Use any of GIMP's selection tools (such as the Fuzzy Select Tool, Free Select Tool, or Rectangular Select Tool) to define the area on your canvas that you want to convert into a vector path. Ensure the "marching ants" marquee is visible.

2. Open the Paths Dialog

If the Paths dock is not currently open, bring it to view:

  • Go to the top menu and select Windows.
  • Navigate to Dockable Dialogs and click Paths.

3. Open the Advanced "Selection to Path" Options

The standard "Select to Path" button uses preset algorithms. To open the dialog with custom parameters:

  • Locate the Selection to Path button at the bottom of the Paths dialog (represented by a red square with a path line running through it).
  • Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click the Selection to Path icon.
  • Alternatively, right-click inside the Paths panel, hold Shift, and select Selection to Path.

4. Adjust the Error Tolerance Settings

A dialog box titled Advanced Selection to Path Options will appear. Configure the parameters to your requirements:

  • Error Threshold: This is the primary tolerance control. A lower value forces the path to adhere strictly to the pixel boundaries of the selection, producing more control points. A higher value increases tolerance, creating a smoother curve with fewer anchor points.
  • Corner Threshold: Adjusts how easily corners are recognized and preserved.
  • Filter Alternative Surround: Helps smooth out minor noise along the selection edge.

5. Generate the Path

Click OK to apply the settings. GIMP will calculate the vectors according to your custom tolerance and generate a new path entry in the Paths dialog. You can make this path visible by clicking the eye icon next to its thumbnail or switch to the Path Tool (B) to edit the resulting nodes.
