Convert Low-Res Logos to High-Res in GIMP

Converting a low-resolution raster logo into a crisp, high-resolution asset in GIMP involves cleaning up pixelation, isolating the original shapes, and converting raster pixels into scalable vector paths. This step-by-step guide covers the process of importing pixelated graphics, refining boundaries using selection and threshold tools, tracing shapes into paths, and exporting the final artwork as a high-DPI raster image or a scalable SVG.

Step 1: Import and Increase Image Resolution

  1. Open GIMP and load your low-resolution logo via File > Open.
  2. Go to Image > Scale Image.
  3. Set the X resolution and Y resolution to 300 pixels per inch (PPI).
  4. Increase the Width and Height dimensions to at least 3000–4000 pixels on the longest side.
  5. Set Interpolation to Cubic or NoHalo, then click Scale. Note: This will not automatically fix pixelation, but it provides the pixel density needed for smoother edge generation.

Step 2: Clean and Isolate Shapes with Threshold

For monochrome or simple flat-color logos:

  1. Navigate to Colors > Threshold.
  2. Adjust the slider until the logo's silhouette is solid black and the background is pure white, minimizing edge artifacts and compression noise.
  3. Click OK.

For multi-colored logos:

  1. Use Colors > Levels or Colors > Curves to boost contrast and separate overlapping tones.
  2. Isolate individual colors by using the Select by Color Tool (Shift + O) with a low Threshold setting (between 5 and 15).

Step 3: Convert Raster Selections to Vector Paths

  1. Select the area you want to convert using the Fuzzy Select Tool (U) or Select by Color Tool (Shift + O).
  2. Go to the top menu and select Select > To Path.
  3. Open the Paths Dialog (Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths) to view the newly generated vector path.
  4. Make the path visible by clicking the eye icon next to the path layer.

Step 4: Smooth and Refine Path Nodes

  1. Choose the Paths Tool (B) from the toolbox.
  2. Click on the path in the workspace to display its anchor points and control handles.
  3. Click and drag misplaced nodes to align with the intended logo design.
  4. Hold Ctrl and click to remove unnecessary nodes that cause bumpy or irregular contours. Smooth out curved lines by pulling the control handles.

Step 5: Render Crisp Colors on New Layers

  1. Create a new transparent layer by clicking Layer > New Layer.
  2. In the Paths Dialog, right-click your refined path and select Path to Selection.
  3. Select the Bucket Fill Tool (Shift + B), choose the original color using the Color Picker, and fill the active selection on your new layer.
  4. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for each distinct color or element in the logo.
  5. Hide or delete the original pixelated background layer.

Step 6: Export the High-Resolution Asset

  • For Vector Format (Infinite Scalability): In the Paths Dialog, right-click the final path, select Export Path..., name the file with an .svg extension, and save it.
  • For High-Resolution Raster (PNG): Go to File > Export As..., select **PNG Image (*.png), ensure full resolution is retained, and click Export**. Ensure background transparency is enabled if required.
