Configure Touch Gestures for Zoom and Pan in GIMP
Configuring touch gestures in GIMP allows you to smoothly pan across and zoom into your canvas using touchscreens, drawing tablets, or precision touchpads. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough to enable touch device recognition, configure input controllers, and map touch actions to canvas navigation in GIMP.
Step 1: Enable Your Touch Device
Before setting up gestures, ensure GIMP detects your touchscreen or touchpad as an active input device:
- Open GIMP and navigate to Edit > Preferences (on macOS, GIMP > Preferences).
- In the left sidebar, expand Input Devices and click on Configure Extended Input Devices.
- Locate your touchscreen, touchpad, or tablet device in the device list.
- Change the Mode dropdown from Disabled to Screen.
- Click Save and then Close.
Step 2: Configure Input Controllers for Gestures
To map specific gesture behaviors—such as two-finger scrolling or pinch gestures—to zoom and pan functions:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Input Devices > Input Controllers.
- Under the Active Controllers column on the right, ensure that your primary controller (such as Main Mouse Wheel or DirectX DirectInput on Windows) is active. If not, select it from the Available Controllers column and click the right arrow button to activate it.
- Double-click the active controller to open the event configuration window.
- Scroll through the list of events to find gesture and scroll
actions:
- Scroll Up / Scroll Down: Assign to
View>Zoom In/Zoom Out. - Scroll Left / Scroll Right: Assign to
View>Scroll Left/Scroll Right. - Ctrl + Scroll: Assign to
View>Zoom In/Zoom Outif you prefer standard modifier-key behavior.
- Scroll Up / Scroll Down: Assign to
- To assign an action, double-click the event, search for the
corresponding navigation command (such as
view-zoom-inorview-scroll-up), select it, and click OK. - Click OK in the Preferences dialog to save your settings.
Step 3: Configure Canvas Modifiers and Interaction
You can adjust how touch inputs interact directly with the canvas space:
- In the Preferences dialog, select Canvas Interaction (or Image Windows > Mouse Pointers in some versions).
- Under the modifiers section, adjust the default behavior for panning
and zooming. By default:
- Space + Touch Drag: Pans (moves) the canvas view.
- Ctrl + Two-Finger Drag / Wheel: Zooms in and out.
- Shift + Two-Finger Drag / Wheel: Scrolls horizontally.
- Enable or disable smooth scrolling options according to your hardware preference.
Step 4: Verify Operating System Touch Settings
GIMP relies on your operating system's native drivers to interpret multi-touch gestures:
- Windows: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad (or Touch). Ensure multi-finger gestures and pinch-to-zoom are enabled.
- macOS: Open System Settings > Trackpad and ensure Smart zoom, Pinch to zoom, and Scroll & Zoom directions are toggled on.
- Linux: Ensure your Wayland or X11 session has
libinputorxf86-input-synapticsconfigured for multi-touch gesture support.
