Change GIMP Color Space to Adobe RGB or ProPhoto
By default, GIMP uses the sRGB color profile as its standard working color space. However, photographers and digital artists working with wide-gamut workflows often prefer Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB to preserve more saturated colors and subtle tonal gradations. This guide explains how to acquire the necessary ICC profiles, configure GIMP's Color Management preferences, and set Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB as your default working space.
1. Obtain the ICC Profiles
GIMP does not always bundle Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB due to licensing restrictions. You must have the corresponding ICC/ICM profile files on your computer before configuring GIMP.
- Adobe RGB (1998): Often included with operating systems or graphics drivers, or downloadable directly from Adobe's official color profile downloads.
- ProPhoto RGB: Often named
ProPhoto.icc,ProPhoto RGB.icm, orROMM RGB. These can be obtained from open-source ICC profile repositories or digital imaging software suites.
Ensure you save these files in an accessible folder on your system or
place them in your operating system's standard color directory (e.g.,
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color on Windows, or
/Library/ColorSync/Profiles on macOS).
2. Open GIMP Preferences
- Launch GIMP.
- Open the preferences dialog:
- Windows/Linux: Go to Edit > Preferences.
- macOS: Go to GIMP > Preferences.
3. Access Color Management Settings
- In the left panel of the Preferences window, locate and click on Color Management.
- Set the Image display mode to Color managed display.
4. Assign the Working RGB Profile
- Locate the RGB profile field under the Color Management settings. This setting dictates the working space for new images and images without embedded color profiles.
- Click the dropdown menu next to RGB profile and select Select color profile from disk....
- Browse to the directory containing your downloaded ICC profile.
- Select your Adobe RGB or ProPhoto
RGB
.iccor.icmfile and click Open.
5. Configure File Import Behavior
To ensure GIMP respects your preferred working space when opening files:
- Look for the Image profile policy section within the Color Management tab.
- Set your preferred behavior for when an imported image does not
match your working space:
- Convert to preferred RGB color profile: Automatically converts incoming images to your newly selected working space.
- Keep embedded profile: Retains the original color profile of the imported file to avoid unwanted color shifts.
- Ask what to do: Displays a prompt every time an image has a mismatched profile, allowing you to choose per image.
6. Save Your Changes
Click OK at the bottom of the Preferences window. GIMP is now configured to use your chosen profile as its primary working RGB space for all newly created documents and color-managed operations.
