Calibrate Stylus Pressure Sensitivity in GIMP
Calibrating your graphics tablet stylus pressure sensitivity in GIMP ensures your digital brush strokes feel natural, responsive, and tailored to your drawing style. This guide walks you through opening the Input Devices preferences dialog, selecting your stylus, and fine-tuning the pressure response curve so your tablet responds accurately to light touches and firm strokes alike.
1. Open the Input Devices Dialog
- Launch GIMP with your graphics tablet plugged in and active.
- Click Edit in the top menu bar.
- Select Input Devices (or navigate to Edit > Preferences > Input Devices and click Configure Extended Input Devices).
2. Select Your Stylus Device
- In the left panel of the Configure Input Devices window, locate the list of detected hardware.
- Click on your tablet's stylus entry (typically named after your tablet brand followed by "Stylus", "Pen", or "Eraser").
- Set the Mode dropdown menu from Disabled to Screen. This activates extended tablet features, including coordinate tracking and pressure recognition.
3. Adjust the Pressure Curve
- Locate the Axes or Curves section within the device settings panel.
- Select the Pressure axis to reveal the input-response graph. The horizontal axis represents physical pressure applied to the tablet surface, while the vertical axis represents the output strength in GIMP.
- Click and drag the control points on the diagonal line to alter the
response:
- Higher Sensitivity (Soft Touch): Drag the curve upward into an arch. This allows light physical pressure to register as a heavier stroke, ideal for users with a light drawing hand.
- Lower Sensitivity (Firm Touch): Drag the curve downward into a dip. This requires more physical force to reach full line width or opacity, preventing accidental heavy marks.
- Linear (Default): A straight diagonal from bottom-left to top-right provides a 1:1 input-to-output ratio.
4. Save and Test Your Settings
- Click Save to lock in your hardware preferences, then click Close.
- Select the Paintbrush tool in the GIMP toolbox.
- Open the Tool Options dockable dialog and expand the Dynamics section.
- Choose a dynamic preset that relies on pressure, such as Pressure Size or Pressure Opacity.
- Draw on the canvas to test the feel. If the stroke transitions are too abrupt or require too much effort, reopen the Input Devices dialog and tweak the pressure curve until it matches your workflow.
