Anchor New Canvas Space to Bottom-Right in GIMP

Expanding an image's dimensions while directing all extra space to specific sides is a common task in GIMP. When you want the newly added canvas space to appear exclusively at the bottom and right of your existing image, you must position the original image at the top-left corner of the newly sized canvas. This guide explains how to configure the Canvas Size dialog settings and offsets to ensure your extra canvas extends toward the bottom-right.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the Canvas Size Dialog
With your project open in GIMP, navigate to the top menu and select Image > Canvas Size....

  2. Set the New Dimensions
In the Canvas Size section at the top of the dialog, increase the Width and Height values to your desired final dimensions. If the chain link icon next to the dimensions is linked, the aspect ratio will remain locked; click the chain icon to unlink it if you need to adjust width and height independently.

  3. Configure the Offset to Top-Left
In GIMP, the position of newly added canvas space is determined by where the original image is placed within the new bounds:

    • Locate the Offset section below the preview area.
    • Set X to 0.
    • Set Y to 0.

Alternatively, you can click and drag the preview box of the original image inside the dialog's visual preview window and drag it completely into the upper-left corner. By pinning the existing content to coordinates (0, 0), the expanded canvas is forced to extend outward toward the right and bottom edges.

  4. Select Layer Behavior
Under the Layers dropdown at the bottom of the dialog, choose how you want your existing layers to behave:

    • Select None if you only want the project boundary expanded while keeping individual layer boundaries unchanged.
    • Select All layers or Image-sized layers if you want the underlying layers to expand to match the new canvas size.
  5. Apply the Changes
Click the Resize button to apply your new dimensions. Your original content will remain anchored in its original position at the top-left, and the new canvas space will be positioned along the bottom and right edges of your workspace.
