Align Multiple Text Layers to a Baseline in GIMP

Aligning multiple text layers to a single horizontal or vertical baseline in GIMP ensures precise, professional typography across your designs. This guide demonstrates how to use GIMP's dedicated Alignment Tool for automated positioning, as well as how to use Guides for exact typographic baseline alignment where bounding boxes differ.

Method 1: Using the Alignment Tool

GIMP’s Alignment Tool is the fastest method to align several layers relative to one another or relative to the canvas.

  1. Select the Alignment Tool: Choose the Alignment Tool from the Toolbox (shortcut: Q).
  2. Choose a Reference Point: In the Tool Options dock, locate the Relative to dropdown menu. Select First item to align everything to the first layer you click, or select Image to align layers relative to the entire canvas.
  3. Select the Layers: Hold the Shift key and click on each text layer on your canvas that you want to align. A yellow bounding box with square handles will appear around every selected layer.
  4. Align the Layers:
    • For a horizontal baseline: Click the Align bottom of target button (to align the bottom edges) or Align middle of target in the Tool Options panel.
    • For a vertical baseline: Click the Align left of target or Align center of target button.

Note: The Alignment Tool aligns the layer boundaries. If your text layers have different font sizes or contain letters with descenders (such as "g", "y", or "p"), the bounding boxes may vary in height.

Method 2: Using Guides for Exact Typographic Baselines

When you need the actual bottom of standard capital and lowercase letters to rest on the exact same line, use a guide rule.

  1. Enable Snapping: Go to the top menu and select View > Snap to Guides. Ensure that View > Show Guides and View > Show Rulers are also checked.
  2. Create a Baseline Guide: Click inside the horizontal ruler at the top of the canvas (or the vertical ruler on the left) and drag downward onto the canvas to place a guide where you want the baseline to be.
  3. Position the Layers:
    • Select the Move Tool (shortcut: M).
    • In the Move Tool Options, ensure Pick a layer or guide is active.
    • Click and drag your text layer so the base of the letters rests directly against the guide line. The layer will snap to the guide when brought close to it.
    • Repeat this step for each text layer to ensure they share the exact same typographic baseline.
