Adjust GIMP Mosaic Tile Neatness and Light Direction
The Mosaic filter in GIMP transforms standard images into textured artwork composed of individual tiles, allowing you to fine-tune both the structural regularity and the perceived depth of the effect. This guide explains how to locate the Mosaic tool, adjust the "Tile neatness" slider to control the orderliness of tile shapes, and configure the "Light direction" setting to control the angle of highlights and shadows.
Opening the Mosaic Filter
- Open your image or select the specific layer you want to edit in GIMP.
- Navigate to the top menu and select Filters > Distorts > Mosaic....
- Ensure the Preview checkbox is enabled so you can monitor your adjustments in real time.
Customizing Tile Neatness
The Tile neatness setting dictates how strictly the tiles adhere to a uniform, geometric layout versus an organic, randomized pattern.
- Locating the Control: Find the Tile
neatness slider within the Mosaic settings dialog. Values range
from
0.0to1.0. - Lower Values (0.0 – 0.3): Produce highly irregular, fractured shapes with uneven edges. This setting creates an authentic, hand-cut stone or broken-glass appearance.
- Mid-Range Values (0.4 – 0.7): Introduce a balanced blend of structure and variation, yielding tiles that follow general rows while maintaining slight imperfections.
- Higher Values (0.8 – 1.0): Force tiles into rigid, uniform alignments based on your selected tile geometry (such as squares, hexagons, or octagons). This produces a clean, modern grid.
Adjusting Light Direction
The Light direction setting controls the simulated 3D relief of the mosaic by dictating where the light source originates, which alters the highlights and shadows cast along the tile bevels and grout lines.
- Locating the Control: Find the Light
direction slider or dial in the dialog. The value is measured
in degrees, ranging from
0to360. - Setting the Angle:
0°sets the light source from the direct left.90°sets the light source from the bottom.180°sets the light source from the direct right.270°sets the light source from the top.
- Matching Composition: To achieve natural integration, align this angle with the existing light sources in your original image or overall design project.
- Enhancing Depth: The light direction works in tandem with the Tile elevation setting. Higher elevation values amplify the intensity of the highlights and shadows cast by your chosen light direction.
Once you have set both parameters to fit your visual goal, click OK to render the mosaic onto your layer.
