Adjust Bezier Handles Independently in GIMP
In GIMP, adjusting the control handles of a cubic Bezier curve
independently allows you to create sharp corners, cusps, and complex
vector shapes without maintaining smooth continuity between curve
segments. By default, moving a Bezier handle causes its opposite partner
to rotate collinearly to preserve a smooth transition. This guide
details how to use the Shift modifier key within GIMP's
Paths Tool to break handle symmetry and adjust each control point on its
own.
Step 1: Select the Paths Tool
Activate the Paths Tool from the toolbox or by pressing the shortcut
key B. Ensure the tool mode in the Tool Options panel is
set to Design.
Step 2: Reveal the Control Handles
Click directly on the target path to activate it, then click the anchor point you wish to edit. The anchor point will display two directional control handles extending outward if it is part of a curved segment.
Step 3: Adjust a Single Handle with the Shift Key
To adjust one control handle without moving the other:
- Hover your cursor over the specific handle end you want to adjust.
- Press and hold the
Shiftkey. - Click and drag the handle to your desired position.
Holding Shift disconnects the angle lock between the two
handles. You can now freely change the length and direction of the
selected handle, forming a sharp corner or custom angle at the anchor
point while the opposite handle remains stationary.
Reconnecting Handle Angles
If you decide to restore a smooth curve, click and drag the handle
again without holding the Shift key. Moving the handle
normally will snap the opposing handle back into alignment, restoring
collinear continuity across the anchor point.
