When Was the GIF Specification Released?

The Graphics Interchange Format, commonly known as the GIF, has been a cornerstone of digital media for decades. CompuServe officially released the first GIF specification to the public on June 15, 1987. Known technically as version 87a, the format was created by a team of software engineers led by Steve Wilhite. CompuServe designed the format to solve a major technological hurdle of the 1980s: delivering color images efficiently across slow dial-up modem connections without consuming excessive bandwidth.

To make file sizes manageable, the 1987 specification utilized Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression. This allowed users to store and transmit 8-bit images—supporting up to 256 colors from a 24-bit RGB color space—without losing visual quality. Because the format was hardware-independent, it enabled different operating systems to display the same graphic files seamlessly.

Two years after the initial rollout, CompuServe published the updated GIF89a specification in 1989. This revision added several critical features, including transparent backgrounds, text overlays, and support for multiple images within a single file. This multi-image feature laid the foundation for the looping, short-form animations that define how the GIF is used today.
