How to Take High-Res Screenshots in FreeCAD
Capturing detailed, publication-ready images of 3D models in FreeCAD is straightforward using the software's built-in image export utility. This guide explains how to bypass your physical monitor's screen resolution limits by setting custom pixel dimensions, adjusting background visibility, and tweaking display settings to generate crisp, high-resolution renders of your designs directly from the 3D viewport.
Step 1: Optimize Display and Mesh Quality
Before capturing the image, ensure your model looks smooth:
- Improve Curve Smoothness: Go to Edit > Preferences > Display > 3D View. Lower the Maximum deviation value (e.g., to 0.05% or lower) so circular edges appear smooth rather than faceted.
- Enable Anti-Aliasing: In the same 3D View tab, set Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) to 4x or 8x to eliminate jagged edges. Click Apply and OK.
- Set the View and Display Mode: Orient the 3D view
to your desired angle. Press
VthenSto set the display mode to "Shaded" (clean surfaces without black wireframes), orVthenFfor "Flat lines" if you want visible CAD edges.
Step 2: Use the "Save Picture" Tool
FreeCAD allows you to render the current viewport at resolutions much higher than your monitor can display.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar.
- Select Save picture....
- In the dialog box, configure your image parameters:
- Resolution / Size: Enter your desired dimensions
manually (e.g.,
3840width and2160height for 4K, or higher for print applications). - Aspect Ratio: Check the box for Keep aspect ratio to maintain the current view proportions, or match it to a standard ratio like 16:9.
- Background: Select your preferred backdrop:
- Current: Keeps the standard FreeCAD gradient or customized background color.
- White: Best for documentation, instruction manuals, or print.
- Black: Standard dark background.
- Transparent: Ideal for isolating the model so it can be pasted onto websites, slides, or graphics without a border.
- Resolution / Size: Enter your desired dimensions
manually (e.g.,
Step 3: Export the Image
- Click Save in the dialog window.
- Choose your destination folder.
- Under file formats, select **PNG (*.png)**, especially if you opted for a transparent background or require lossless compression.
- Name the file and click Save. FreeCAD will process the image off-screen and generate the high-resolution file.
