How to Set Perspective View in FreeCAD

Switching to a perspective view in FreeCAD allows you to visualize your 3D models with natural depth perception and realistic vanishing points, contrasting with the default parallel orthographic projection. This guide covers the quickest and most reliable methods to toggle the perspective camera in the 3D viewport using the main menu, the viewport context menu, and the on-screen navigation cube.

Method 1: Use the Top Menu Bar

  1. Open your model in FreeCAD.
  2. In the top application menu, click on View.
  3. Select Perspective view from the drop-down list.

The viewport will immediately update from the parallel orthographic projection to a perspective projection.

Method 2: Use the 3D Viewport Context Menu

  1. Hover your mouse cursor over an empty area within the 3D viewport (ensure no geometric elements are selected).
  2. Right-click to open the context menu.
  3. Hover over or click Perspective view.

Method 3: Use the Navigation Cube

If the Navigation Cube is enabled in the top-right corner of your 3D viewport:

  1. Right-click directly on the Navigation Cube, or click the small drop-down arrow located beside it.
  2. Select Perspective from the projection options.

Adjusting the Field of View

In perspective mode, closer parts of the model appear larger than distant parts. To adjust the field of view angle:

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences.
  2. Navigate to the Display section and select the 3D View tab.
  3. Locate the Camera or Field of View settings to fine-tune the lens angle to match your visualization needs.

To return to the standard engineering projection at any time, repeat any of the steps above and select Orthographic view.
