How to Render FreeCAD Models with POV-Ray

This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on rendering 3D models created in FreeCAD using the open-source POV-Ray raytracer. You will learn how to configure the external POV-Ray executable inside FreeCAD, set up a rendering project, position cameras, assign materials, and export a photorealistic image directly from your design workspace.

Prerequisites: Install POV-Ray

Before rendering in FreeCAD, you must have POV-Ray installed on your operating system:

  • Windows: Download and run the official installer from the POV-Ray website.
  • Linux: Install it via your package manager (for example, sudo apt install povray on Debian/Ubuntu).
  • macOS: Install it using Homebrew (brew install povray) or MacPorts.

Step 1: Configure POV-Ray in FreeCAD

  1. Open FreeCAD.
  2. Navigate to Edit > Preferences.
  3. Select the Raytracing tab (or Render tab if you installed the newer Render Workbench from the Addon Manager).
  4. Locate the field labeled POV-Ray executable and browse to the path where POV-Ray is installed:
    • Windows: Typically located in C:\Program Files\POV-Ray\v3.7\bin\pvengine64.exe.
    • Linux: Usually located at /usr/bin/povray.
    • macOS: Typically located at /usr/local/bin/povray or /opt/homebrew/bin/povray.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Step 2: Set Up the Rendering Scene

  1. Open the FreeCAD document containing the model you want to render.
  2. Switch to the Raytracing workbench using the workbench dropdown menu.
  3. Click the New POV-Ray project button (an icon showing a POV-Ray page) to create a raytracing container in the tree view.
  4. Choose a template (e.g., ProjectStd.pov) when prompted. This template sets up default lighting and background elements.

Step 3: Add Objects to the Render Project

  1. In the 3D view, orient your camera to the desired angle.
  2. Select your 3D parts in the tree view.
  3. Click the Insert part into project button.
  4. To match the render camera to your current viewport, select the POV-Ray project in the tree view and click the Reset camera tool.

Step 4: Assign Materials

  1. Select the inserted part under your POV-Ray project tree.
  2. In the Raytracing menu, select Utilities > Material.
  3. Choose a predefined material definition (such as chrome, glass, or matte plastics) to dictate how the surface reflects light.

Step 5: Render the Output

  1. Select the POV-Ray project item in the tree view.
  2. Click the Render button (icon depicting a camera or raytraced sphere).
  3. FreeCAD will call the POV-Ray engine in the background. Once the process completes, the rendered image will appear in a separate window.
  4. Save the resulting image in your preferred format (PNG, JPEG, or BMP) directly from the preview window.
