How to Export FreeCAD TechDraw to DXF or SVG
FreeCAD allows you to export TechDraw sheets directly to both DXF and SVG formats without needing third-party converters. This guide covers the straightforward methods to convert your 2D technical drawings into editable vector formats, ensuring compatibility with other CAD systems, laser cutters, and vector graphic design software.
Exporting TechDraw Sheets to SVG
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is the native rendering format for TechDraw templates and sheets, making SVG export seamless and accurate.
- In the Tree view, click on the TechDraw Page object you want to export.
- Go to the top menu and select TechDraw > Page > Export Page as SVG (or right-click the Page in the tree and choose Export SVG).
- Choose your destination folder, name your file, and click Save.
The exported SVG retains text, line weights, and dimension geometry, making it ideal for opening in vector editors like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.
Exporting TechDraw Sheets to DXF
AutoCAD DXF is the standard format for sharing 2D technical drawings across manufacturing and CAD platforms. FreeCAD provides a dedicated tool for this conversion.
- Highlight the TechDraw Page in the Tree view.
- Navigate to the top menu and click TechDraw > Page > Export Page as DXF.
- Select your save directory, enter a file name, and click Save.
Alternatively, you can select the Page, go to File > Export, and select **Drawing Exchange (*.dxf)** from the file type dropdown menu.
Tips for Best Export Results
- Update Drawings First: Always press F5 or click the TechDraw Redraw Page button before exporting to ensure all projected views, dimensions, and centerlines are up to date.
- Text and Dimensions: Depending on the DXF viewer you use, fonts may substitute if standard CAD fonts are missing. If precise text alignment is critical in DXF, consider configuring your FreeCAD DXF export settings under Edit > Preferences > Import-Export > DXF.
- Scale Consistency: TechDraw exports preserve 1:1 scale for drawing sheets. If your views use custom scales (e.g., 1:2 or 2:1), they will appear on the exported sheet exactly as formatted on your TechDraw layout.
