How to Change FreeCAD 3D View Background Color

Customizing the FreeCAD workspace allows you to reduce eye strain and improve the visual contrast between your models and the viewport. This guide explains how to access the preferences settings in FreeCAD to switch the 3D view background between a solid color and a gradient, as well as how to select custom color palettes for your design environment.

Steps to Change the 3D View Background

  1. Open Preferences:
    • On Windows and Linux, go to the top menu and select Edit > Preferences.
    • On macOS, go to FreeCAD > Preferences (or press Cmd + ,).
  2. Navigate to Display Settings:
    • In the left-hand navigation panel of the Preferences window, click on the Display icon.
    • Switch to the Colors tab at the top of the display settings pane.
  3. Select Background Type:
    • Locate the 3D View or Background section.
    • Open the dropdown menu next to Background type. FreeCAD provides several display styles:
      • Single color: Sets a uniform, solid background throughout the viewport.
      • Linear gradient: Blends two colors vertically from top to bottom.
      • Radial gradient: Blends two colors from the center outwards.
  4. Pick Your Colors:
    • For a solid background: Click on the color box next to Background color to open the color picker, choose your desired color, and click OK.
    • For a gradient background: Click the color box for Top/Center color (or Gradient color 1) and choose your starting shade. Then, click the color box for Bottom/Outer color (or Gradient color 2) to pick the transition shade.
  5. Apply the Changes:
    • Click Apply to preview your changes in the 3D viewport immediately.
    • Click OK to save your preferences and close the window.

Tips for Viewport Colors

  • Dark Themes: If you prefer working in low-light environments, choose dark gray or charcoal tones for your background rather than pure black, which helps keep black model edges clearly visible.
  • Presentations and Screenshots: When exporting images for documentation or printing, switch to a pure white solid background to eliminate gradients and save printer ink.
