FreeCAD System Requirements for Windows

This guide outlines the essential hardware and software specifications needed to run FreeCAD efficiently on a Windows operating system. While FreeCAD can function on modest setups, complex 3D modeling, rendering, and finite element analysis (FEA) demand specific hardware capabilities. Below, you will find both the minimum specifications necessary to launch the software and the recommended hardware configurations to ensure a smooth, lag-free modeling experience.

Operating System

  • Recommended: Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • Minimum: Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
  • Note: 32-bit versions of Windows are no longer supported in modern versions of FreeCAD. Always ensure you are running the latest 64-bit release.

Processor (CPU)

FreeCAD's geometric modeling kernel operates primarily on a single thread, meaning single-core clock speed is critical for responsiveness during active design work.

  • Minimum: 64-bit Intel or AMD multi-core processor (2 GHz or faster).
  • Recommended: Modern Intel Core i5/i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 5/7/9 with high single-core clock speeds (3.5 GHz or higher). Multi-core processing is utilized during rendering tasks and certain simulation workflows.

System Memory (RAM)

The amount of RAM determines the complexity and scale of the assemblies you can design without experiencing system slowdowns.

  • Minimum: 8 GB
  • Recommended: 16 GB for standard 3D design and technical drafting; 32 GB or more for large assemblies, mesh operations, point clouds, and intensive FEA calculations.

Graphics Card (GPU)

FreeCAD relies heavily on OpenGL to render 3D viewports. A dedicated graphics card ensures fluid navigation and viewport rotation.

  • Minimum: Integrated graphics (such as Intel HD/UHD Graphics) with support for OpenGL 3.0 or higher.
  • Recommended: Dedicated GPU from NVIDIA (GeForce or RTX series) or AMD (Radeon series) with at least 4 GB of VRAM and full support for OpenGL 4.x. Dedicated GPUs drastically reduce viewport stuttering in large parts and shaded views.

Storage

  • Minimum: 2 GB of free space for installation.
  • Recommended: Solid State Drive (SSD), preferably NVMe, with at least 20 GB of free space. An SSD significantly improves startup times, project loading speeds, and overall responsiveness when caching large files.

Display and Input Devices

  • Display Resolution: 1920x1080 (Full HD) minimum. High-DPI and 4K displays are supported, though scaling settings may require slight adjustment in the FreeCAD preferences.
  • Input: A standard three-button mouse with a scroll wheel is required for navigating the 3D viewport (orbiting, panning, and zooming). 3D navigation controllers (such as 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse) are natively supported on Windows.
