FreeCAD STL Export Settings for 3D Printing
Exporting a 3D model from FreeCAD to an STL format requires configuring mesh resolution settings properly to ensure smooth curves without creating unnecessarily massive file sizes. FreeCAD treats solid models as precise mathematical representations, whereas the STL format breaks surfaces down into flat triangular facets. To get the best 3D print quality, you must adjust specific tessellation parameters, including linear deflection, angular deflection, and file format type.
Configuring Global Export Preferences
The quickest way to export to STL is using the standard
File > Export tool. To ensure your model does not export
with coarse, blocky curves, adjust the default export settings
beforehand:
- Navigate to Edit > Preferences.
- Select Import-Export in the left sidebar.
- Click on the Mesh Formats tab.
- Locate the Export section to adjust the following
critical parameters:
- Maximum mesh deviation: This controls linear deflection, which is the maximum distance allowed between the original curved surface and the flat triangular mesh face. The default value is often too high (around 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm). For standard FDM printing, set this to 0.01 mm to 0.05 mm. For high-resolution resin (SLA) printing, lower it to 0.005 mm.
- Maximum angular deflection: This setting limits the angle between the normal vectors of adjacent mesh triangles. Lowering this value ensures smoother transitions across sharp curves. Set this between 10° and 20° (15° is an ideal baseline).
- Ensure the format is set to Binary rather than ASCII. Binary STLs contain the exact same geometric fidelity as ASCII files but are significantly smaller and faster to slice.
Using the Mesh Design Workbench for Maximum Control
For precise, model-specific adjustments without altering your global settings, use the Mesh Design Workbench to generate and inspect the mesh before exporting:
- Switch to the Mesh Design workbench using the workbench dropdown.
- Select the solid object in your tree view.
- Click Meshes > Create mesh from shape... from the top menu.
- In the dialog box, select the Standard mesher to
manually set:
- Surface deviation: Controls surface accuracy
(recommended:
0.02 mm). - Angular deviation: Controls angle limits
(recommended:
15°).
- Surface deviation: Controls surface accuracy
(recommended:
- Alternatively, select the Netgen mesher for
automated, highly uniform meshes:
- Choose Fine or Very fine for small, detailed mechanical parts.
- Click OK. FreeCAD will generate a new mesh object in the tree view.
- Hide the original solid, inspect the mesh visually to ensure curves
are smooth, select the mesh, and go to File > Export
to save it as a
Binary STL Mesh (*.stl).
