FreeCAD Refine Shape Property in Part Design

The Refine shape property in FreeCAD's Part Design workbench is a geometric cleanup tool that removes unnecessary edges and merges adjacent coplanar faces generated during 3D modeling operations. This article explains the primary function of this property, why it is critical for maintaining clean CAD models, how it impacts downstream operations like filleting, and the performance trade-offs to consider when using it.

The Core Purpose of Refine Shape

When performing additive or subtractive operations in FreeCAD—such as Pads, Pockets, or Booleans—the underlying OpenCASCADE geometric modeling kernel frequently leaves behind artifact edges. For instance, if you pad a shape onto an existing face, the boundary lines of the sketch may remain visible on that face, effectively splitting a single flat plane into multiple segments.

The Refine property automatically detects these redundant features and runs an algorithm to merge adjacent coplanar faces into a single continuous face. It also combines collinear edges into single lines and removes duplicate vertices, leaving only the essential geometry required to define the boundary of the solid.

Why You Should Use Refine Shape

  1. Cleaner Model Topology: Eliminating unnecessary split lines makes selecting faces and edges much easier when attaching subsequent sketches or defining datum geometry.
  2. Reduced Failure in Downstream Features: Operations such as Chamfer and Fillet are notoriously sensitive to complex vertex and edge intersections. Artifact lines often cause these operations to fail. Refining the shape simplifies the topological graph, vastly increasing the success rate of fillets and chamfers.
  3. Improved Mesh and STEP Export: When exporting parts to formats like STEP or generating STL meshes for 3D printing, unrefined geometry can result in overly dense mesh clusters and split surfaces in external CAM or simulation software.

How to Access and Enable It

The Refine property can be controlled at two levels:

  • Per-Feature Basis: In the Tree view, select the active feature (such as a Pad or Pocket). In the Property view under the Data tab, find the Refine property and set its value from false to true. FreeCAD will immediately recompute the shape without the residual lines.
  • Global Setting: You can configure FreeCAD to refine features automatically by navigating to Edit > Preferences > Part Design > General and checking the option to automatically refine models after sketch-based or boolean operations.

Performance Considerations

While refining geometry improves topological cleanliness, it requires extra computational power. Each time a feature recalculates, the kernel must analyze faces and edges to determine what can be merged. In very large parametric models with extensive feature trees, enabling Refine on every step can noticeably slow down recalculation times. For complex designs, it is often best practice to leave it disabled during initial modeling and enable it selectively before applying dress-up features like fillets or before exporting the final model.
