FreeCAD Angle Constraint to Horizontal Axis
Controlling the angular orientation of geometry relative to the horizontal plane is a fundamental step when creating fully defined sketches in FreeCAD. This guide explains how to quickly apply an angle constraint between any sketch line and the Sketcher workbench's horizontal axis or reference geometry, ensuring your parametric models remain stable and predictable.
Method 1: Constraining Directly to the Sketch Horizontal Axis
The most direct way to measure an angle against the horizontal plane is to select the base horizontal axis provided by the sketch coordinate system.
- Open your sketch in the Sketcher Workbench.
- Click on the line you wish to constrain.
- Click on the Horizontal Sketch Axis (the solid horizontal red or green reference line running through the origin). Both the line and the axis should now be highlighted.
- Click the Constrain angle icon in the toolbar, or press the keyboard shortcut K followed by A (or simply A depending on your FreeCAD version and keybindings).
- A dialog box will appear. Enter your desired angle in degrees and click OK.
Method 2: Constraining Using a Horizontal Construction Line
If the global horizontal axis is far from your geometry or causes reference flipping, using a dedicated horizontal construction line is the standard alternative.
- In the Sketcher toolbar, click the Toggle construction geometry icon (which turns the drawing tools blue).
- Select the Create a line tool and draw a line near or connected to the endpoint of your geometry.
- Select this new line and click the Constrain horizontally tool (shortcut H) to lock it flat.
- Switch construction mode off by clicking the Toggle construction geometry icon again.
- Select the geometry line you want to angle, then select the horizontal construction line.
- Click the Constrain angle tool, input your angle value, and confirm with OK.
Managing Angle Direction and Quadrants
- Selection Order: FreeCAD calculates angles based on vertex points and selection order. If the angle appears in the supplementary or opposite quadrant (e.g., measuring 150° instead of 30°), undo the operation, deselect everything, and select the elements in reverse order.
- Reference Angles: To track angles dynamically without locking the geometry, select the line and the horizontal axis, then click the Toggle to/from reference constraint tool before applying the angle. This measures the current angle without making the sketch over-constrained.
