Fix Broken Intermediate Sketches in FreeCAD
Modifying an intermediate sketch in FreeCAD frequently causes downstream features to fail due to the Topological Naming Problem, where internal names of faces, edges, and vertices shift after a parametric change. This guide outlines how to identify broken dependencies, re-link sketch attachments, repair lost external geometry, and update downstream features to restore your 3D model without rebuilding it from scratch.
Identify the Failed Feature
When an intermediate sketch changes, downstream operations (such as Pads, Pockets, or subsequent Sketches) will display a yellow exclamation mark or red error icon in the Tree view. Expand the model tree and locate the first feature that failed immediately below your modified sketch. Always fix the errors in chronological order from top to bottom, as fixing an earlier failure often automatically resolves the ones that follow.
Re-link the Sketch Attachment (Map Mode)
If a subsequent sketch was mapped directly to a face of a solid that changed shape or position, its attachment mode may be invalid:
- Select the broken sketch in the Tree view.
- In the Property View under the Data tab, find the Attachment property.
- Click the
...button next to Map Mode. - The Attachment task panel will open. Clear the invalid references and pick a new, stable planar reference (such as a standard coordinate plane, a Datum Plane, or the intended face).
- Ensure the Map Mode is set to an appropriate method (commonly Flat Face), adjust offsets if necessary, and click OK.
Repair Broken External Geometry References
If a sketch opens but contains red constraint errors or missing purple reference lines, its external geometry links are broken:
- Double-click the broken sketch to enter the Sketcher workbench.
- Look for external geometry lines (usually colored magenta/purple) that have lost their references or are colored orange/red.
- Use the Elements panel on the left to locate invalid external geometry.
- Delete the broken external reference by selecting it and pressing Delete. This will temporarily break constraints that relied on it.
- Use the Create external geometry tool to re-link to the updated edges or vertices of the underlying geometry.
- Reapply the missing dimensional or geometric constraints to the newly selected external references until the sketch is fully constrained.
- Close the sketch to let the model recompute.
Re-select Lost References in 3D Operations
Features like Fillets, Chamfers, and Pockets may fail because the specific edges or faces they were applied to changed their internal index numbers:
- Double-click the broken operation (e.g., Fillet or Chamfer) in the Tree view.
- Review the list of selected edges or faces in the task panel.
- Remove missing or highlighted invalid references.
- Click Add and select the correct edges or faces directly in the 3D viewport.
- Click OK to apply the fix and recompute.
Prevent Future Dependency Failures
To minimize dependency breakage when modifying intermediate sketches in future models:
- Use Datum Planes: Attach intermediate sketches to Datum Planes rather than directly to the generated faces of solid features.
- Reference the Origin: Anchor dimensions to the base coordinate system (Origin axes and planes) whenever possible rather than downstream solid edges.
- Keep Sketches Simple: Rely on multiple simple sketches rather than a single overly complex sketch with deep external dependencies.
