Create Isometric View in FreeCAD TechDraw

Creating an isometric projected view in FreeCAD's TechDraw workbench allows you to present a clear, three-dimensional representation of your model on a standard technical drawing sheet. This guide outlines the most efficient methods to generate an isometric view, including using the Projection Group tool, inserting a view directly from the 3D viewport, and manually configuring view projection vectors.

Method 1: Using the TechDraw Projection Group Tool

The Projection Group tool is the standard method for generating multiview projections alongside an isometric view.

  1. Open your 3D model and switch to the TechDraw Workbench.
  2. Create a new drawing sheet by clicking Insert 'Default Page' or Insert Page using Template.
  3. In the tree view, select the body, part, or component you want to display.
  4. Click the Insert Projection Group icon on the toolbar.
  5. In the Task panel on the left, you will see a layout grid of projection checkboxes.
  6. Check the box in one of the corner positions (such as the top-right or bottom-right box) to enable an isometric projection.
  7. Adjust the Scale setting (e.g., Page, Automatic, or Custom) as needed.
  8. Click OK to generate the views on your drawing sheet.

Method 2: Inserting the Active 3D View

If you only need an isometric view without primary orthogonal projections, you can insert the current camera orientation directly.

  1. In the 3D viewport, set the camera to an isometric angle. You can do this by pressing 0 on your numeric keypad or by selecting View > Standard views > Axonometric > Isometric from the top menu.
  2. Select the object in the tree view.
  3. Switch back to your TechDraw page tab.
  4. Click the Insert View button on the toolbar.
  5. FreeCAD will insert a single projection matching the exact angle of your 3D view.

Method 3: Modifying an Existing View’s Direction Vector

You can convert any existing flat projection view into an isometric view by editing its data properties.

  1. Select the view you wish to modify in the tree view or directly on the drawing sheet.
  2. Navigate to the Data tab in the Property View panel (usually in the lower-left corner).
  3. Locate the Direction property.
  4. Set the X, Y, and Z coordinates to standard isometric vector values, such as:
    • X: 1
    • Y: -1
    • Z: 1 (Note: You can use combinations of 1 and -1 depending on which quadrant or face of the object you want to display).
  5. Press Enter and recompute the document (press F5 or click the Refresh icon) to update the view.

Adjusting View Appearance

Once created, you can fine-tune the isometric view:

  • Scale: Select the view and change the Scale Type to Custom in the Data tab, then adjust the Scale property to fit the sheet.
  • Line Display: Toggle Hard Hidden lines or Smooth Lines under the Data properties to control edge visibility for cleaner rendering.
  • Position: Click and drag the view frame to position it within the drawing border, or manually adjust the X and Y values under the view's Base placement properties.
