Associate FreeCAD Project Files on Windows
Registering file associations for FreeCAD ensures that
double-clicking any .FCStd project file automatically opens
it within the FreeCAD application. This guide outlines the standard
methods to link FreeCAD files to Windows using the File Explorer context
menu, Windows Settings, and direct executable targeting.
Method 1: Using the "Open With" Menu
The fastest way to register the .FCStd extension is
directly through Windows File Explorer.
- Locate any FreeCAD project file (
.FCStd) on your computer. - Right-click the file and hover over Open with, then select Choose another app.
- In the pop-up window, look for FreeCAD in the list
of applications.
- If FreeCAD is listed, select it.
- If FreeCAD is not listed, scroll down, click More
apps, then click Look for another app on this
PC. Navigate to your FreeCAD installation directory (typically
C:\Program Files\FreeCAD <version>\bin\FreeCAD.exe), selectFreeCAD.exe, and click Open.
- Check the box labeled Always use this app to open .FCStd files.
- Click OK.
The file icon will update to the FreeCAD logo, and double-clicking
any .FCStd file will now launch it in FreeCAD.
Method 2: Using Windows Settings
If you prefer to configure associations globally through the operating system:
- Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings menu.
- Navigate to Apps > Default apps.
- In the search bar under "Enter a file type or link type", type
.FCStd. - Click on the current default application (or the prompt to choose a default).
- Select FreeCAD from the list, or browse your PC to
select
FreeCAD.exefrom the program'sbinfolder. - Click Set default.
Method 3: Reinstalling or Updating FreeCAD
If file associations fail to persist due to permission errors or broken registry entries:
- Download the latest official FreeCAD installer.
- Run the installer with administrator privileges.
- During the setup process, ensure the option to Associate .FCStd files with FreeCAD is checked.
- Complete the installation to allow the installer to write the necessary registry keys automatically.
