How to Zoom In and Out in FontForge

Zooming in and out of a specific glyph in FontForge is essential for inspecting Bezier curves and adjusting fine typographic details. This guide covers how to navigate to a glyph's outline editor and use mouse controls, keyboard shortcuts, the toolbar, and application menus to control your magnification level smoothly.

Open the Glyph Outline Window

Before you can zoom into an individual glyph, you must open it in its dedicated editing space. In the main Font View window (the grid showing all characters), locate the glyph you wish to edit and double-click it. This opens the Glyph Outline View window (CharView).

Mouse Wheel Shortcuts

The fastest way to zoom in and out of the active glyph canvas is using your mouse:

  • Zoom In: Hold Ctrl (or Cmd on macOS) and scroll the mouse wheel up.
  • Zoom Out: Hold Ctrl (or Cmd on macOS) and scroll the mouse wheel down.

The zoom centers dynamically around your mouse pointer's location, allowing you to quickly focus on specific nodes or control handles.

Keyboard Shortcuts

If you prefer navigating via the keyboard, use the following default key combinations:

  • Zoom In: Press Ctrl + + (or the plus key on the numeric keypad).
  • Zoom Out: Press Ctrl + - (or the minus key on the numeric keypad).
  • Fit to Window: Press Ctrl + 0 to automatically fit the entire glyph canvas into the current window size.

The Zoom Tool

FontForge includes a dedicated Zoom tool located in the Tools palette:

  1. Click the Magnifying Glass icon in the Tools window, or press the shortcut key Z.
  2. Left-click anywhere on the canvas to zoom in centered on that point.
  3. Hold Alt (or Option on macOS) and left-click to zoom out.
  4. Click and drag to draw a rectangular marquee around a specific element, such as a serif or corner; FontForge will automatically zoom to fit that selected area to the screen.

The View Menu

You can also adjust the scale using the application menu bar:

  1. Click on View in the top menu of the Glyph Outline window.
  2. Select Zoom In or Zoom Out to step through standard scale increments.
  3. Choose Fit to scale the glyph to the active window dimensions.
