How to Use the Perspective Tool in FontForge
The Perspective tool in FontForge allows type designers to apply three-dimensional distortions and vanishing-point scaling directly to glyph outlines. This guide walks you through locating the tool in the Glyph View, selecting the target vector paths, manipulating the perspective envelope, and cleaning up the resulting contours to ensure proper font rendering.
Step 1: Open the Target Glyph
- Launch FontForge and open your font project.
- In the Font View window, double-click the glyph you want to modify to open the Glyph View.
Step 2: Select the Outlines
- Switch to the Pointer tool in the tool palette (or
press
V). - Select the specific contours you wish to distort. To apply the
effect to the entire character, press
Ctrl + A(Windows/Linux) orCmd + A(macOS).
Step 3: Activate the Perspective Tool
- Locate the Perspective tool in the floating Tools palette. Its icon depicts a grid receding into the distance (trapezoidal perspective lines).
- Click the icon to activate it.
Step 4: Apply the Transformation
- Click and drag across the glyph canvas to define the perspective bounding box.
- Release the mouse to reveal the control points at the corners of the bounding frame.
- Click and drag any of the corner handles to shift the plane. Moving handles closer together creates a vanishing-point effect, while moving them outward expands that edge of the glyph.
- Release the mouse button once the desired slant or depth is achieved. FontForge will recalculate the underlying Bézier curves to match the new perspective plane.
Step 5: Clean Up the Contours
Perspective transformations often generate redundant control points, overlapping paths, or off-axis extrema that can cause rendering artifacts. Clean up the glyph using the following steps:
- Navigate to Element > Add Extrema
(
Ctrl + Shift + X) to ensure points exist at all horizontal and vertical curve peaks. - Navigate to Element > Simplify > Simplify
(
Ctrl + Shift + M) to remove unnecessary nodes generated by the transformation. - Select Element > Correct Direction
(
Ctrl + Shift + D) to fix any clockwise or counter-clockwise path winding errors that could invert filled areas.
