How to Open a Font File with FontForge Python

This guide explains how to programmatically open and load a font file using Python within the FontForge environment. You will learn the required fontforge module methods, see a direct code example, and understand how to properly execute the script from the command line.

The Basic Python Script

FontForge provides its own Python module named fontforge. To open a font file—such as a .ttf, .otf, or .sfd—use the fontforge.open() method.

Create a Python script named open_font.py:

import fontforge

# Specify the path to your font file
font_path = "example.ttf"

try:
    # Open the font file
    font = fontforge.open(font_path)

    # Verify the font loaded by printing basic metadata
    print(f"Font Name: {font.fontname}")
    print(f"Family Name: {font.familyname}")
    print(f"Total Glyphs: {len(font)}")

    # Close the font when processing is complete
    font.close()

except Exception as e:
    print(f"Error opening font file: {e}")

How to Run the Script

The fontforge Python module is typically embedded inside the FontForge application rather than installed into your global system Python environment. To execute the script, use the FontForge executable with the -script flag from your terminal or command prompt:

fontforge -script open_font.py

If you are using Windows, navigate to the FontForge installation directory (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\FontForgeBuilds\) and run:

fontforge.exe -script open_font.py

Scripting Options

  • Interactive Python Shell: You can experiment with FontForge commands interactively by running fontforge -lang=py in your terminal.
  • Supported Formats: The fontforge.open() function automatically detects and supports various font formats, including TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf), PostScript (.pfb), and FontForge's native Spline Font Database (.sfd).
