How to Add Shadow and Extrusion Effects in FontForge
FontForge includes built-in styling tools and vector manipulation features that allow type designers to generate shadows, perspective blocks, and extruded 3D effects directly on glyphs without relying on external vector software. This guide covers how to apply FontForge's automated styling commands to produce instant drop shadows and outlines, as well as how to manually construct custom 3D extrusions with clean path geometry.
Method 1: Using the Automated Shadow Tool
FontForge features an automated transformation command designed specifically for creating shadows.
- Select the Glyphs: Open your font file and select the glyph or range of glyphs you want to modify in the Font View window.
- Open the Shadow Dialog: Navigate to Element > Style > Add Shadow... in the top menu bar.
- Configure the Parameters:
- Angle: Sets the direction of the light source and shadow path (e.g., 45° or -45°).
- Offset / Distance: Determines how far the shadow extends from the main character body.
- Shadow Type: Choose whether the shadow should be an outline, solid block, or wireframe effect depending on the desired visual depth.
- Apply the Effect: Click OK. FontForge will generate the shadow paths according to your specifications.
Method 2: Creating a Custom Manual Extrusion
For isometric or heavy 3D block extrusions where you need full control over the connecting planes:
- Duplicate the Base Outline: Double-click the glyph
to enter the Glyph Edit window. Select all points
(
Ctrl + A), copy them (Ctrl + C), and paste them (Ctrl + V) into the same layer. - Translate the Duplicate: With the duplicated points selected, move them along your desired perspective axis using the arrow keys, or navigate to Element > Transform > Transform..., select Move, and enter exact horizontal and vertical offset values.
- Bridge the Facets: Use the Point Tool or Pen Tool to draw closed quadrilateral shapes connecting the corresponding outer corner vertices of the front face to the back face.
- Merge the Geometry:
- Select all paths (
Ctrl + A). - Go to Element > Overlap > Remove Overlap
(
Ctrl + Shift + O) to combine the connecting planes into a single unified 3D silhouette.
- Select all paths (
Finalizing and Cleaning Paths
Extrusions and shadows frequently generate self-intersecting lines and inverted path directions. Before exporting:
- Correct Path Directions: Go to Element >
Correct Direction (
Ctrl + Shift + D) to ensure all exterior contours wind counter-clockwise and cutouts wind clockwise. - Simplify Extraneous Nodes: Go to Element
> Simplify > Simplify (
Ctrl + Shift + M) to remove redundant control points generated during the overlap removal. - Adjust Metrics: Open Metrics > Set Width... or manually drag the right side bearing in the Glyph window to ensure the expanded width of the shadow does not collide with neighboring characters.
