How to Check Enforced Enterprise Policies in Firefox
This article provides a straightforward guide for enterprise users on
how to view the organizational restrictions and configurations currently
applied to their Mozilla Firefox browser. By accessing the built-in
about:policies page, you can quickly identify active
administrative rules, understand what each specific policy does, and
check for any configuration errors applied by your IT department.
Accessing the Policies Page
To see if your organization is managing your Firefox browser, follow these steps:
- Open your Mozilla Firefox web browser.
- Click on the address bar at the top of the window.
- Type
about:policiesinto the address bar and press Enter (or Return on Mac).
Understanding the Policy Tabs
Once the page loads, you will see a menu on the left side of the screen containing up to three sections. Here is how to use them to check your restrictions:
1. Active This is the default view. It displays all the enterprise policies currently enforced on your browser.
- If your browser is not managed by an organization, it will simply state: "The Enterprise Policies service is inactive."
- If policies are enforced, you will see a table with two columns: Policy Name and Policy Value.
- The Policy Name tells you the specific rule being
applied (for example,
DisablePrivateBrowsingorBlockAboutConfig). - The Policy Value shows the setting for that rule
(such as
true, false, or specific URLs and file paths).
2. Documentation If you see a Policy Name in the "Active" tab and do not know what restriction it actually applies, click on the Documentation tab.
- This section lists every possible enterprise policy supported by Firefox.
- Locate the name of the active policy in this list to read a plain-language description of how it restricts or modifies your browser's behavior.
3. Errors This tab will only appear if your IT administrator has made a mistake while configuring the browser's restrictions.
- Clicking this tab will reveal which policies failed to load and the technical reason why they are not currently enforced on your system.
Verifying Management Status Elsewhere
If you only need to know whether your browser is managed without looking at the specific rules, you can also check the main menu:
- Click the three horizontal lines (the application menu) in the top-right corner of Firefox.
- Look at the very top of the menu list. If enterprise policies are
active, you will see a banner that says "Managed by your
organization". Clicking this banner will take you directly to
the
about:policiespage.
