How to Auto-Open Websites in Firefox Container Tabs

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to configure the Mozilla Firefox web browser to automatically open specific domains inside designated Container tabs. By installing Mozilla's official Multi-Account Containers extension, you can easily assign websites to specific containers, ensuring your browsing sessions remain isolated, private, and organized without manual intervention every time you visit a site.

Step 1: Install the Required Extension

While Firefox features built-in container technology, automatically routing specific domains requires an official add-on created by Mozilla.

  1. Open the Firefox browser.
  2. Navigate to the official Firefox Add-ons store.
  3. Search for Firefox Multi-Account Containers.
  4. Click Add to Firefox and confirm the installation when prompted.

Step 2: Assign a Domain to a Container

Once the extension is installed, you can bind any website domain to a specific container.

  1. Navigate to the website domain you want to automatically contain (e.g., google.com).
  2. Click the Multi-Account Containers icon in the top-right extensions toolbar (it looks like a square grid with a small tab). If you do not see it, click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) to find it.
  3. In the menu that appears, click Always open this site in...
  4. Select the specific Container you want this website to use (e.g., Personal, Work, Banking, or Shopping).

Step 3: Confirm the Automatic Redirection

After assigning the site, you must confirm the behavior so Firefox does not ask for your permission on future visits.

  1. Immediately after completing Step 2, or the next time you visit the domain, Firefox will display a prompt asking, "Open this site in your assigned container?"
  2. Check the box labeled Remember my decision for this site.
  3. Click the Open in [Container Name] Container button.

The domain is now fully configured. Every time you type that URL into the address bar or click a link leading to that domain, Firefox will automatically close the standard tab and open the website inside your chosen container.

How to Remove a Domain from a Container

If you no longer want a domain to open in a specific container automatically, you can easily reverse the setting.

  1. Navigate to the website that is currently opening in the container.
  2. Click the Multi-Account Containers icon in the toolbar.
  3. Uncheck the box next to Always open in [Container Name] or select Manage Site List to remove the domain from that container's rules.
