How Firefox DevTools Tracks and Exports Live CSS Changes
This article explains how the Changes panel in Firefox Developer Tools automatically monitors, records, and exports live CSS modifications made during a web debugging session. It covers the real-time tracking mechanisms within the Page Inspector, how visual diffs are generated and organized by stylesheet, and the exact methods available to copy and export these adjustments directly into your local source code.
Real-Time CSS Tracking
The Changes panel operates passively in the background the moment you open the Firefox Developer Tools. It is located in the right-hand pane of the Page Inspector, alongside the Layout, Computed, and Fonts tabs.
Whenever you modify a CSS value, toggle a property on or off, add a new declaration, or create a new selector within the Inspector's Rules view, the Changes panel immediately logs the action. It tracks these modifications by comparing the initial state of the CSS Object Model (CSSOM) when the page loaded against the current, mutated state of the styles applied to the page.
Visualizing the Modifications
To make tracking easy to understand, the Changes panel formats your edits into a standard version-control diff view:
- Source Grouping: Edits are organized under the name
of the stylesheet where the rule originates (e.g.,
styles.css:45). Edits made to element-specific styles are grouped under an "Inline stylesheet" header. - Additions and Deletions: Original properties that
have been altered or disabled are highlighted in red and prefixed with a
minus (
-) sign. New or updated values are highlighted in green and prefixed with a plus (+) sign. - Automatic Cleanup: The tracking is state-aware. If
you change a
marginfrom10pxto20px, and then manually change it back to10px, the Changes panel recognizes that the net change is zero and removes the entry from the tracking list.
Exporting CSS Changes
Live edits made in the browser are temporary and will be lost if the page is refreshed. To save your work, the Changes panel provides three distinct methods to export your modified CSS into your local development environment.
1. Copy a Single Rule When you hover your mouse over any modified selector inside the Changes panel, a Copy Rule button appears on the right side of that rule's block. Clicking this copies the entire CSS rule—including the selector, curly braces, and all active declarations—to your clipboard. It automatically filters out the old (red) values and keeps only the new (green) values, Alongside any untouched properties that belong to that rule.
2. Copy All Changes At the very top of the Changes
panel is a Copy All Changes button. Clicking this
aggregates every modification made across all stylesheets during your
current session and copies them to your clipboard. When you paste this
output into your code editor, Firefox formats it cleanly and includes
CSS comments (e.g.,
/* styles.css | http://example.com/styles.css */) so you
know exactly which file each updated rule belongs to.
3. Selective Copy and Paste If you only want to
export a single line or a specific set of declarations, you can
highlight the text directly inside the Changes panel and press
Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on macOS). The panel
processes this selection intelligently: it automatically strips out the
+ and - diff symbols and ignores the deleted
red lines, ensuring that you only paste valid, production-ready CSS into
your source files.
