Configure Firefox to Always Ask Where to Save Downloads

By default, Mozilla Firefox automatically saves all downloaded files directly to your computer's "Downloads" folder. While convenient for some, this default behavior can quickly lead to a cluttered folder and make it difficult to organize important documents as you get them. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to change your Firefox settings so the browser always prompts you to choose a specific destination folder before saving any file.

Step 1: Open the Firefox Menu

Launch your Firefox web browser. Look at the top-right corner of the browser window and click the menu button, which looks like three stacked horizontal lines (often called the hamburger menu).

Step 2: Access Settings

From the drop-down menu that appears, click on Settings (on some older versions or specific operating systems, this may be labeled as Options or Preferences). This will open a new tab containing your browser configuration options.

Step 3: Navigate to the Downloads Section

Ensure you are in the General panel, which is selected by default on the left-hand sidebar. Scroll down the page until you reach the Files and Applications heading. Immediately under this heading, you will see the Downloads sub-section.

Step 4: Enable the Prompt

In the Downloads sub-section, you will see the default setting labeled "Save files to" followed by your current default folder path. Directly beneath this, check the box next to Always ask you where to save files.

Step 5: Adjust Specific File Types (If Necessary)

Sometimes, Firefox has pre-configured rules for specific file types (like PDFs or ZIP files) that override the general download setting. Look at the Applications list located directly below the Downloads section.

  1. Review the Content Type column for any files that still download automatically.
  2. Click on the corresponding drop-down menu in the Action column.
  3. Change the action to Always ask.

Step 6: Close the Settings Tab

Firefox saves all your preference changes automatically. Once you have checked the box and adjusted any necessary file types, you can simply close the Settings tab. The next time you click a download link, your computer's file explorer window will pop up, allowing you to rename the file and choose the exact folder where you want it saved.
