Compile FFmpeg with Native HTTPS Support

This guide outlines the complete process for compiling FFmpeg from source with HTTPS support enabled. By default, FFmpeg requires an external Transport Layer Security (TLS) library or platform-native security APIs to handle encrypted https:// input streams and outputs. Below, you will find instructions on installing the necessary build dependencies, choosing between cross-platform libraries (OpenSSL, GnuTLS) and operating system-native APIs (Schannel on Windows, SecureTransport on macOS), configuring the source tree, and compiling the binary.

1. Choose a TLS Implementation

FFmpeg supports HTTPS through several cryptographic backends:

  • OpenSSL: Widely supported and fast. Requires --enable-openssl (and --enable-nonfree if using older OpenSSL versions with license conflicts).
  • GnuTLS: Common on Linux distributions. Licensed under LGPL/GPL, avoiding non-free licensing restrictions. Requires --enable-gnutls.
  • Schannel (Windows native): Built directly into Windows. Does not require external third-party libraries. Requires --enable-schannel.
  • SecureTransport (macOS native): Built into Apple platforms. Requires --enable-securetransport.

2. Install Required Dependencies

Ensure you have a C compiler, build tools, and the development headers for your chosen TLS library.

On Debian/Ubuntu (using GnuTLS or OpenSSL):

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y build-essential yasm nasm pkg-config git
# For GnuTLS:
sudo apt install -y libgnutls28-dev
# OR for OpenSSL:
sudo apt install -y libssl-dev

On macOS (using Homebrew):

brew install yasm nasm pkg-config

3. Fetch the FFmpeg Source Code

Clone the official FFmpeg repository:

git clone https://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git ffmpeg-source
cd ffmpeg-source

4. Configure the Build

Run the ./configure script with the flag that corresponds to your chosen TLS library.

Using GnuTLS (Linux/Unix):

./configure --enable-gnutls

Using OpenSSL:

./configure --enable-openssl --enable-nonfree

Using Native Windows TLS (Schannel via MinGW/MSYS2):

./configure --enable-schannel

Using Native macOS TLS (SecureTransport):

./configure --enable-securetransport

Note: You can append --prefix=/usr/local or another path to customize the installation location.

5. Compile and Install

Compile the source tree using all available CPU cores, then install the binary.

make -j$(nproc 2>/dev/null || sysctl -n hw.ncpu)
sudo make install

6. Verify HTTPS Support

Once installed, check that the https protocol is listed in the compiled binary:

ffmpeg -protocols | grep https

If the compilation was successful, the output will display https in the supported Input and Output protocols list. You can test it directly by opening an encrypted network stream:

ffmpeg -i https://example.com/stream.m3u8 -c copy output.mp4
