DVI Connector Extraction Force Specifications

This article provides a technical overview of the mechanical extraction force requirements defined for Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connectors. It outlines the official unmating force parameters established by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG), compares them to insertion thresholds, and explains the functional role of integrated jackscrews during connection and removal.

Standard Extraction Force Ratings

According to the DDWG DVI Revision 1.0 specification, the mechanical unmating (extraction) force for a standard DVI connector must adhere to the following limits:

  • Minimum Extraction Force: 9.8 Newtons (1.0 kgf / 2.20 lbf)
  • Maximum Extraction Force: 39.2 Newtons (4.0 kgf / 8.81 lbf)

For comparison, the specification sets the maximum insertion (mating) force at 44.1 Newtons (4.5 kgf / 9.91 lbf).

The defined minimum extraction threshold of 9.8 N ensures that the connector does not unintentionally disconnect due to cable weight or minor vibrations. The maximum cap of 39.2 N guarantees that the connector can be disconnected smoothly without causing mechanical strain to the receptacle, internal pins, or the host printed circuit board (PCB).

Testing Conditions and Mechanical Jackscrews

The specified extraction values apply solely to the friction fit of the connector interface pins and the external metal shielding. Measurements are recorded under standard EIA-364-13 test methods with the connector assembly fully disengaged from any secondary retention mechanisms.

Standard DVI cables incorporate dual 4-40 UNC threaded thumbscrews (jackscrews) to lock the plug into the female receptacle. When these screws are fastened, the extraction force is governed by the mechanical shear strength of the screw threads and mounting standoffs rather than the connector pins. The specified 9.8 N to 39.2 N extraction range is only valid once both thumbscrews are completely unthreaded.

Durability and Retention Over Time

DVI specifications require the connector to maintain its extraction force within the 9.8 N to 39.2 N window across a minimum of 100 mating cycles. This durability requirement prevents degradation of the ground shield spring fingers and ensures consistent pin-to-socket contact pressure over the operating lifespan of the hardware.
