What is Live Unwrap in Blender?

The Live Unwrap feature in Blender is a real-time UV editing tool that automatically updates a 3D model's UV map as you mark seams, clear seams, or transform geometry. Instead of manually triggering the unwrap command after every single adjustment, Live Unwrap instantly recalculates the UV layout, providing immediate feedback that significantly speeds up the texture mapping workflow.

How Live Unwrap Works

Under standard conditions, unwrapping a 3D mesh in Blender requires you to select your seam lines in Edit Mode, press U, and select Unwrap. If you decide to add another seam or move an edge, you must execute the unwrap command again to update the UV map.

When Live Unwrap is enabled, Blender constantly listens for changes to the mesh's seams or pin constraints. The moment an edge is marked or unmarked as a seam, the UV island recalculates and unfolds instantly in the UV Editor window.

Key Benefits of Live Unwrap

  • Instant Visual Feedback: You can see how seams split the mesh and affect texture stretching without constantly running manual commands.
  • Faster Seam Placement: It allows you to experiment with seam locations rapidly to find the cleanest, least distorted layout for texturing.
  • Interactive Pinning: When combined with pinned UV vertices (pressing P in the UV Editor), Live Unwrap recalculates the surrounding geometry around fixed points in real time as you move them.
  • Streamlined Workflow: It eliminates repetitive keystrokes, making the complex process of UV mapping far more intuitive and efficient.

How to Enable and Use Live Unwrap in Blender

  1. Enter Edit Mode: Select your 3D mesh and switch to Edit Mode (Tab).
  2. Open the UV Editor: Split your screen and open a UV Editor viewport alongside your 3D Viewport.
  3. Perform an Initial Unwrap: Select all faces (A), press U, and choose Unwrap.
  4. Enable Live Unwrap: In the UV Editor header menu, click on UV and check Live Unwrap.
  5. Modify Seams: In the 3D Viewport, select any edge, right-click, and select Mark Seam (or press Ctrl + E > Mark Seam). The UV Editor will automatically update the UV islands in real time.
