What is Auto-Normalize in Blender Weight Painting?
Auto-normalize in Blender's weight painting mode is a tool feature that automatically maintains the total combined weight of all vertex groups assigned to a specific vertex at a value of 1.0 (or 100%). When you paint new weights onto a vertex attached to multiple bones, auto-normalize instantly reduces or increases the weights of the other connected bones so the total sum always equals 1.0. This prevents mesh stretching, unnatural deformation, and uneven influence during character rigging and animation.
Why Weight Normalization Matters
In 3D rigging, a vertex can be influenced by multiple bones. Each bone's influence is represented by a weight value ranging from 0.0 (no influence) to 1.0 (full influence).
If the combined weights of all bones influencing a single vertex exceed 1.0, the vertex will over-react to bone movements, resulting in awkward pinches and exaggerated mesh deformations. Conversely, if the total weight is less than 1.0, the vertex will not fully follow the skeleton, leaving parts of the mesh lagging behind.
Auto-normalize eliminates the need to manually recalculate and adjust weights across multiple vertex groups every time you make a tweak.
How Auto-Normalize Works
When Auto-Normalize is enabled, Blender performs real-time calculations while you paint:
- Weight Increases: If you paint on a vertex to increase Bone A's weight, Blender proportionally subtracts weight from Bone B, Bone C, and any other bones attached to that same vertex.
- Weight Decreases: If you erase or subtract weight from Bone A, Blender redistributes that lost weight back to the other active vertex groups sharing that vertex.
- Lock Protection: If a specific vertex group is locked in the Vertex Groups panel, auto-normalize respects that lock and will not adjust its weight values.
Practical Example
Imagine a vertex on a character's elbow shared equally between the upper arm bone (0.5 weight) and the forearm bone (0.5 weight). The total sum is 1.0.
If you paint on the upper arm bone to increase its weight to 0.8 with Auto-Normalize turned on:
- Blender automatically reduces the forearm bone's weight to 0.2.
- The total combined weight remains perfectly balanced at 1.0 (0.8 + 0.2).
How to Enable Auto-Normalize in Blender
To turn on auto-normalize while weight painting:
- Select your armature, hold
Shift, select the mesh, and enter Weight Paint Mode. - Open the Tool Settings menu (found in the Top Bar,
or press
Nto open the Sidebar panel and select the Tool tab). - Expand the Options drop-down section.
- Check the box next to Auto Normalize.
Once enabled, Blender handles weight distribution automatically as you stroke over the mesh, ensuring clean rig behavior without manual weight math.
