What Happens If You Close Blender Without Saving Textures?
If you close Blender without saving a painted texture, the painted
data is permanently lost when the application shuts down. Even if you
"packed" the texture into the file during your session, packing an
unsaved, newly created image only stores it in system memory (RAM).
Unless you explicitly save the image file to your disk or save the
.blend file after packing the image, Blender will
discard all unsaved image data upon exit.
Why Blender Discards Unsaved Textures
Blender treats .blend scene files and external media
(like images and textures) as separate entities. When you paint a
texture directly inside Blender:
- Data Lives in RAM: The strokes you paint are written to temporary system memory, not directly to your storage drive.
- Packing Requires a Save: Packing an image tells
Blender to embed the image data inside the
.blendfile. However, if the source image was never saved to disk as a file (e.g., JPEG or PNG) and you do not save the.blendfile after packing it, Blender has nowhere to store that memory buffer when closing. - Save Scene vs. Save Image: Saving your
.blendfile usingCtrl + Sdoes not automatically save unsaved external images unless those images have already been properly packed and the project file is saved afterward.
How to Check If Your Texture Is Lost
When you re-open your Blender file:
- The material using the texture will likely appear solid pink, indicating a missing texture link.
- If the image block remains in the file, it will revert to a blank slate or its last saved state, wiping out your recent paint session.
Can You Recover Lost Painted Textures?
Recovery options are limited, but you can try the following steps:
- Check Auto-Saves: Go to File > Recover
> Auto Save and select the most recent
.blendfile prior to closing. If you packed the image before an auto-save triggered, the data might be embedded in that auto-saved file. - Recover Last Session: Go to File >
Recover > Last Session. This opens the
quit.blendfile created when Blender last closed. - Check the Temp Folder: Inspect your system's
temporary directory (such as
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Tempon Windows or/tmpon Linux/macOS) for auto-saved image buffers or backup.blendfiles.
Best Practices to Avoid Texture Loss
To prevent losing work in future texture painting sessions:
- Save Images Immediately: Right after creating a new
paint slot or texture, go to the Image Editor, click
Image > Save As (
Alt + S), and write the file to your hard drive. - Use "Save All Images": Before closing Blender, navigate to the Image Editor header and click Image > Save All Images to commit every modified texture to disk simultaneously.
- Enable Save Prompt: Ensure Save Prompt is enabled under Edit > Preferences > Save & Load. This forces Blender to display a warning dialog if you attempt to quit with unsaved data.
