Render a Transparent Background in Blender
Rendering an image or animation with an alpha channel allows you to isolate your 3D objects against a transparent background, making post-production and compositing significantly easier. In Blender, achieving a transparent background requires enabling the transparent film setting in your render properties and selecting an output format that explicitly supports alpha data (RGBA). This guide covers the exact steps needed for both the EEVEE and Cycles render engines.
Step 1: Enable Transparent Film
To remove the default world background and replace it with an alpha channel, you must enable transparency in the render settings:
- Open the Render Properties tab (the back of a camera icon) in the Properties panel on the right.
- Scroll down and click to expand the Film section.
- Check the box labeled Transparent.
Once checked, the 3D Viewport and final renders will display a gray-and-white checkerboard pattern in place of the world background, indicating an active alpha channel. This setting works identically for both EEVEE and Cycles.
Step 2: Configure Output Settings for Alpha
You must use a file format that supports transparency to preserve the alpha channel when saving the render:
- Go to the Output Properties tab (the printer icon printing a photo).
- Scroll down to the Format and Output sections.
- Set the File Format to an alpha-compatible format such as PNG, TIFF, or OpenEXR.
- In the Color settings directly below the file format, select RGBA. Selecting RGB will discard the alpha channel and result in a black or white background.
- Set the Color Depth to 8-bit or 16-bit depending on your quality requirements.
Step 3: Check Compositor Settings (If Applicable)
If you are using the Blender Compositor, ensure the alpha channel passes through your node tree:
- Open the Compositing workspace and ensure Use Nodes is checked.
- Verify that the Alpha output of the Render Layers node is routed properly to the Composite node. If you are using color adjustments or overlays, ensure you use the Alpha Over node so transparent areas are not filled with solid color.
Step 4: Render and Save the Image
- Press F12 on your keyboard (or go to Render > Render Image in the top menu).
- Once the render finishes, click Image in the top-left menu of the render window and select Save As (or press Alt + S).
- Confirm that the format is still set to RGBA in the save dialog sidebar, choose your destination folder, and click Save As Image.
