Recover Auto Save vs Last Session in Blender
Blender provides two primary fail-safe commands under the File menu to protect users from losing work: "Recover Last Session" and "Recover Auto Save." While both functions retrieve unsaved 3D data from Blender’s temporary directory, they serve distinct recovery needs. This guide explains how each recovery command operates, how they differ, and when to use them to restore your project after an unexpected shutdown, crash, or accidental closure.
Recover Last Session
The Recover Last Session command restores the state of Blender from the moment the application was last closed.
- How it works: Every time Blender exits normally, it
automatically writes a backup file named
quit.blendinto your system's temporary directory. Choosing File > Recover > Last Session simply loads thisquit.blendfile. - Primary Purpose: It helps you recover work if you accidentally clicked "Don't Save" when closing the program, or if Blender closed unexpectedly while still managing to complete its standard exit routine.
- Limitation: It only stores the single most recent
exit state. Opening and closing a new, empty Blender instance will
overwrite the previous
quit.blendfile.
Recover Auto Save
The Recover Auto Save command allows you to choose from a list of automatic background saves generated at regular intervals while working.
- How it works: Blender periodically saves a snapshot
of your open file in your operating system's temporary directory (by
default, every 2 minutes). These files are named with random numbers
(the system process ID) and a
.blendextension (e.g.,12345.blend). Choosing File > Recover > Auto Save opens a file browser directed straight to this temporary directory, sorted by modification date. - Primary Purpose: It protects against sudden crashes, power outages, system freezes, or critical mistakes made during a session. Because multiple auto-save files may exist, you can select the timestamp closest to the event that caused the issue.
- Limitation: Auto-saves are temporary. Operating systems may purge the temporary directory upon rebooting, and Blender auto-saves are not updated when no changes are being actively made.
Key Differences
- Trigger: "Recover Last Session" relies on a file
generated at application exit (
quit.blend). "Recover Auto Save" relies on files generated automatically at timed intervals during active work. - File Selection: "Recover Last Session" opens immediately without prompt. "Recover Auto Save" opens a file browser allowing you to choose from several timestamped versions.
- Best Use Case: Use Last Session if you just closed Blender and realized you forgot to save. Use Auto Save if Blender crashed mid-sculpting, your computer lost power, or you need to roll back to a state from a few minutes ago.
Next Step After Recovery
When using either recovery feature, the restored file opens with its temporary name. To ensure your progress is preserved, immediately save the project under its proper name and directory using File > Save As.
