How to Use the Decimate Modifier in Blender

The Decimate Modifier in Blender is a powerful tool designed to quickly reduce the polygon count of a 3D model while preserving its overall shape and detail. To use it, select your model in Object Mode, open the Modifier Properties tab, add the Decimate Modifier, and choose from three reduction modes: Collapse, Un-Subdivide, or Planar. By adjusting the ratio or angle settings, you can lower the mesh's face count to optimize performance for game engines, real-time rendering, or 3D printing, and then apply the modifier to permanently commit the geometry changes.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Decimate Modifier

1. Select Your Object

  1. Open Blender and ensure you are in Object Mode.
  2. Left-click to select the 3D model you want to simplify.

2. Add the Decimate Modifier

  1. In the Properties Editor on the right side of the screen, click the Modifier Properties tab (represented by a blue wrench icon).
  2. Click the Add Modifier dropdown menu.
  3. Under the Generate column, select Decimate.

3. Choose the Right Decimation Mode

The Decimate Modifier offers three distinct modes depending on your model's geometry and your desired outcome:

  • Collapse: Merges vertices based on a percentage ratio. This is the best default option for complex, high-poly sculpted models.
  • Un-Subdivide: Reverses previous subdivision steps on clean, quad-based topology. Ideal for grid-like meshes.
  • Planar: Merges adjacent faces that lie on the same flat plane based on a specific angle limit. Ideal for hard-surface models, CAD imports, or architectural geometry.

4. Adjust the Reduction Settings

Using Collapse Mode:

  • Locate the Ratio slider (set to 1.0000 by default).
  • Drag the slider down to reduce the polygon count. For example, setting the Ratio to 0.5 reduces the face count by approximately 50%.
  • Check the Face Count metric shown at the bottom of the modifier panel to monitor geometry reduction in real time.
  • Enable Triangulate if your target application requires all geometry to be converted into triangular faces.

Using Un-Subdivide Mode:

  • Increase the Iterations value to step back through subdivision levels. Higher numbers reduce geometry aggressively while preserving quad structure.

Using Planar Mode:

  • Increase the Angle Limit (default is 5 degrees) to merge flat faces. Higher angles result in fewer faces but may distort curved edges.

5. Apply the Modifier

Once you are satisfied with the balance between visual quality and lower polygon count:

  1. Hover your cursor over the Decimate Modifier panel.
  2. Click the downward arrow next to the modifier's name and select Apply (or press Ctrl + A while hovering over the panel).

Your mesh geometry is now permanently optimized and ready for export or further work.
