How to Use Follow Active Quads Unwrap in Blender
The Follow Active Quads tool in Blender is a powerful UV unwrapping method designed to quickly flatten quad-based geometry into a clean, uniform grid layout based on the shape of a single active face. This guide covers how to prepare your mesh, execute the unwrapping process step-by-step, and troubleshoot common issues so you can easily map textures onto curved or tubular objects like pipes, belts, and roads.
Prerequisites Before Unwrapping
To ensure the unwrapping process works correctly, make sure your mesh meets the following conditions:
- Apply Scale: Select your object in Object Mode,
press
Ctrl + A, and choose All Transforms or Scale. Unapplied scale distorts UV maps. - Quad Topology: The geometry must consist entirely of four-sided polygons (quads). This method does not work properly on triangles or n-gons.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Select and Unwrap the Active Quad
- Select your object and switch to Edit Mode
(
Tab). - Enter Face Select Mode (press
3). - Select a single quad face on your mesh. This face will act as the template for the rest of the UV map.
- Open the UV Unwrapping menu by pressing
U, and select Unwrap. - Open the UV Editing Workspace to view the unwrapped face.
- In the UV Editor, ensure this face is shaped as a neat rectangle or
square. If it is distorted, straighten its edges manually or use
S(Scale) along specific axes (XorY) so the quad forms clean 90-degree angles.
2. Select the Remaining Faces
- In the 3D Viewport, hover over the rest of the face loop or entire
mesh and press
Lto select linked faces, or pressAto select all faces. - Ensure your previously unwrapped quad remains the Active
Face (it should have a lighter, highlighted border compared to
the other selected faces). If it is not active,
Shift-click the face twice to make it active while keeping the rest of the mesh selected.
3. Apply Follow Active Quads
- Press
Uin the 3D Viewport to open the UV Mapping menu. - Select Follow Active Quads.
- A pop-up operator menu will appear in the bottom-left corner with
Edge Length Mode options:
- Length Average: Calculates the average length of edges. This is usually the best choice for uniform grids.
- Even: Forces all UV faces to maintain equal spacing.
- Length: Uses the raw lengths of the active face edges.
- Choose the mode that provides the cleanest result for your model. The UV grid will instantly straighten across the entire selection based on your active quad.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Distorted UV Grid: If the resulting UV map curves awkwardly, your initial active quad was likely uneven. Return to the UV Editor, align the active quad's vertices to strict horizontal and vertical lines, and run the command again.
- Menu Option Missing or Ineffective: Check if any non-quad faces exist in your selection. Delete or convert any triangles and n-gons into quads before re-running the tool.
- Faces Overlapping: If your mesh forms a continuous
loop (like a torus or cylinder), you must mark a seam
(
Ctrl + E> Mark Seam) along one edge to allow the UV map to split open horizontally or vertically.
