How to Tighten Creases with Blender Pinch Brush
In Blender's Sculpt Mode, achieving sharp, defined edges and deep folds requires precise control over your mesh's geometry. The Pinch Brush is specifically designed to pull nearby vertices toward the center of your cursor, making it the ideal tool for sharpening soft valleys and defining crisp details. This article provides a straightforward guide on locating the Pinch Brush, adjusting its settings, and applying proper sculpting techniques to tighten creases effectively.
Step 1: Switch to Sculpt Mode
- Select your 3D object in the viewport.
- Change the mode from Object Mode to Sculpt
Mode using the mode dropdown menu in the top-left corner (or
press
Ctrl + Taband select Sculpt).
Step 2: Select the Pinch Brush
- Open the left toolbar by pressing
Tif it is hidden. - Click the Pinch brush icon, or press the hotkey
Pto cycle through the brush shortcuts until the Pinch brush is active.
Step 3: Configure Brush Settings
To get a sharp crease without distorting your mesh, set your brush properties before sculpting:
- Radius (
F): Set the brush size slightly wider than the crease you want to tighten. A smaller radius gives localized control over narrow cracks. - Strength (
Shift + F): Start with a moderate strength (around0.35to0.5). High strength can cause vertices to overlap or pinch into jagged geometry. - Auto-Smooth: Keep Auto-Smooth low (or set to
0) while pinching to prevent the brush from accidentally softening the edge you are trying to sharpen.
Step 4: Apply the Pinch Brush to Creases
- Identify the Line: Locate the shallow fold or soft seam on your model.
- Follow the Contour: Click and drag the brush directly along the centerline of the crease. The mesh will pull inward toward the stroke, instantly narrowing the gap.
- Use Invert Mode (Optional): Holding
Ctrlwhile using the Pinch brush will perform a Magnify action, pushing vertices away from each other. Use this if a crease becomes overly tight or clustered.
Step 5: Essential Techniques for Clean Creases
- Ensure Sufficient Density: The Pinch brush requires enough geometry to create a sharp line. Enable DynaTopo (Dynamic Topology) or apply a Multiresolution Modifier if the surface lacks resolution.
- Pre-Define with the Crease Brush: For deep folds, carve the initial groove using the Crease Brush first, then pass the Pinch Brush over it to tighten the surrounding geometry.
- Enable Stabilize Stroke: Press
Shift + Smooth Strokeor enable Stabilize Stroke in the Brush Settings (Ymenu) to ensure smooth, continuous lines without shaky hand movements.
