How to Subtract Weight in Blender Weight Paint
Subtracting weight in Blender's Weight Paint mode is essential for refining vertex groups and ensuring smooth armature deformation. This guide explains the direct methods for removing bone influence from vertices using the Weight Paint brush, including tool menu adjustments, keyboard shortcuts, and critical settings for precise control over your 3D mesh.
Method 1: Change the Brush Blend Mode to Subtract
The most direct way to remove weight is by changing the brush's blend mode.
- Select your armature, hold
Shift, select your mesh, and switch to Weight Paint mode from the mode dropdown menu (or pressCtrl + Tab). - Select the specific bone or vertex group you want to edit.
- Open the Tool Settings panel on the right side of
the 3D Viewport (press
Nif the sidebar is hidden) or look at the top tool bar. - Locate the Blend dropdown menu (default is usually Mix or Draw).
- Change the Blend mode to Subtract.
- Left-click and drag your brush over the mesh to remove weight from those vertices.
Method 2: Use the Ctrl Shortcut (Temporary Subtraction)
If you are painting with the standard Add or Mix brush and want to quickly remove weight without changing settings:
- Keep your brush set to its default blend mode (Add or Mix).
- Press and hold the Ctrl key while painting over the target area.
- Holding Ctrl temporarily reverses the brush behavior, subtracting weight instead of adding it.
- Release the Ctrl key to return to standard weight painting.
Method 3: Paint with a Weight Value of 0.000
You can also erase weight by painting directly with a zero value.
- Set the brush Blend mode to Mix.
- Set the Weight slider value to
0.000. - Paint over the vertices. This replaces existing higher weights with a zero weight value, removing the influence of the selected vertex group.
Key Brush Settings for Subtracting Weight
- Strength: Controls how quickly the weight is
removed per stroke. Lower the strength for subtle adjustments or set it
to
1.000to subtract weight quickly. - Radius: Adjusts the size of the brush. Press
Fto quickly resize the brush in the viewport. - Auto Normalize: Found under the
Options tab in the sidebar (
N). When enabled, Blender automatically adjusts the weights of other connected bones so the total weight on a vertex always equals1.0. Keep this turned on for character rigging to prevent unintended mesh stretching.
