How to Stitch UV Islands in Blender

Stitching UV islands together in Blender is an essential step for creating seamless 3D textures and organizing your UV maps efficiently. This process involves merging separate UV edges or vertices that correspond to shared geometry on your 3D model. By using Blender’s native UV tools like the Stitch tool, Weld command, and Target Weld tool, you can quickly reconnect split UV seams, minimize visible texture seams, and streamline your texture painting workflow.

Method 1: Using the Stitch Tool (Alt + V)

The Stitch tool is the most direct way to join split UV edges while automatically aligning the corresponding islands.

  1. Open the UV Editing workspace.
  2. Set the selection mode in the UV Editor to Edge Select (press 2).
  3. Select the boundary edge of a UV island that you want to attach. The corresponding shared edge on the target island will highlight automatically.
  4. Press Alt + V (or right-click and choose Stitch).
  5. Move your mouse to preview how the islands connect.
  6. Press Left-Click or Enter to confirm the operation.

Note: While the Stitch preview is active, you can press I to switch which island moves toward the other (source, target, or midpoint).

Method 2: Using the Weld Command (M)

If two UV islands are already positioned close together or overlapping, you can merge their vertices directly.

  1. Select the vertices or edges you want to combine in the UV Editor.
  2. Right-click in the UV Editor viewport and select Weld (or press M).
  3. The selected components will average their positions and merge into unified UV geometry.

Method 3: Using Target Weld

For interactive, vertex-by-vertex stitching:

  1. Select the Target Weld tool from the left toolbar in the UV Editor.
  2. Click and drag a vertex from one UV island toward the target vertex on another island.
  3. Release the mouse button over the destination vertex to weld them together.

Adjusting Stitch Settings

Whenever you perform a Stitch operation, an operator box labeled Stitch UVs appears in the bottom-left corner of the UV Editor. Expand this box to modify the operation:

  • Snap to Target: Keeps the target island static while moving and reshaping the selected island to match.
  • Midpoint: Pulls both islands toward an average center point.
  • Limit: Restricts the stitch to vertices within a specified maximum distance.
