How to Soften Paint Strokes in Blender
Softening painted strokes in Blender is essential for creating smooth gradients, realistic textures, and seamless blending in your 3D models and 2D artwork. Whether working in Texture Paint mode or using Grease Pencil, you can achieve soft edges by utilizing the dedicated Blur and Smudge tools, adjusting brush falloff settings, tweaking brush hardness, or applying non-destructive modifiers.
Softening Strokes in Texture Paint Mode
1. Use the Blur Tool
The most direct way to soften existing paint strokes on a 3D texture is with the Blur tool.
- Select Texture Paint mode from the mode selector menu.
- In the toolbar on the left, select the Blur brush tool (icon looks like a drop or blurred circle).
- Adjust the brush size using F and strength using Shift + F.
- Paint directly over sharp stroke edges to smooth and blend them into surrounding colors.
2. Adjust Brush Falloff
To paint soft strokes from the start, modify the brush's falloff profile before painting.
- Select your standard Draw brush.
- Open the Tool tab in the Sidebar (press N if hidden).
- Expand the Falloff panel.
- Select the Smooth or Smoother preset curve. This tapers the opacity toward the outer edges of your brush stroke, eliminating hard lines.
3. Lower Brush Hardness and Strength
- Hardness: In the brush settings at the top bar or
Tool panel, reduce the Hardness value down toward
0.000. This creates a feathered feather-like edge around your brush. - Strength: Lower the brush Strength
(e.g., to
0.100–0.300). This allows you to slowly build up color through multiple passes, creating soft, semi-transparent transitions.
4. Blend Colors with the Smudge Tool
The Smudge tool physically drags existing color pixels across the surface, acting like a wet brush.
- Select the Smudge tool from the toolbar.
- Drag from one color area into another to manually mix the edges together.
- Lower the strength setting for more control over the blending process.
Softening Strokes in Grease Pencil
If you are using Blender for 2D animation or 3D sketch drawing via Grease Pencil, use these methods to soften stroke points and colors:
1. Use the Vertex Paint Blur Tool
- Select your Grease Pencil object and switch to Vertex Paint mode.
- Choose the Blur tool from the toolbar.
- Brush over stroke colors to smooth color transitions across control points.
2. Apply a Blur Color Filter (Non-Destructive)
- Select the Grease Pencil object in Object Mode.
- Go to the Visual Effects Properties tab (magic wand icon) in the Properties panel.
- Click Add Effect and select Blur.
- Adjust the Position X and Y values to blur the rendered strokes across the entire layer or specific pass without altering the underlying vector data.
