How to Smooth Vectors in Blender

Smoothing vectors in Blender is essential for creating clean curve paths, seamless Geometry Nodes setups, and polished surface normals. Whether you are working with curve handles, manipulating custom vector attributes, or using nodes to interpolate spatial data, Blender provides several built-in tools to achieve smooth vector transitions. This guide covers the quickest and most effective methods to smooth vectors across Blender's modeling, curve editing, and Geometry Nodes workflows.

1. Smoothing Curve Vector Handles in Edit Mode

When working with Bezier curves, vectors are represented by handles attached to control points. Sharp transitions occur when handle types are set to Vector.

  1. Select your curve object and enter Edit Mode (Tab).
  2. Select the control points where you want smooth vector transitions.
  3. Press V to open the Handle Type menu.
  4. Select Automatic (or press Shift + H) to let Blender smoothly calculate handle direction based on neighboring points. Alternatively, choose Aligned to keep handles in a straight line while adjusting length manually.
  5. To smooth overall curve curvature, select all points (A), right-click, and select Smooth Curve or Smooth Curve Radius.

2. Smoothing Vectors in Geometry Nodes

If you are generating or manipulating vectors (such as positions, offsets, or custom attributes) using Geometry Nodes, you can smooth them using specific nodes.

Method A: Using the Blur Attribute Node (Blender 3.5+)

The Blur Attribute node is the most efficient way to smooth vector data across points or vertices.

  1. Add a Blur Attribute node (Shift + A > Attribute > Blur Attribute) between your vector data and your output/target node.
  2. Change the Data Type dropdown on the node from Float to Vector.
  3. Connect your vector field (e.g., Position or custom vector attribute) into the Value input.
  4. Increase the Iterations value to increase the level of smoothing across adjacent elements.
  5. (Optional) Adjust the Weight input to control which regions receive more or less smoothing.

Method B: Resampling and Interpolating Curves

To smooth vector paths generated by curves in Geometry Nodes:

  1. Insert a Resample Curve node to increase point density along the splines.
  2. Follow it with a Set Handle Type node, setting the handle type to Automatic or Smooth.
  3. Use a Trim Curve or Fillet Curve node if you want rounded vector corners at sharp junctions.

3. Smoothing Surface Vector Normals on Meshes

If you need to smooth shading vectors (normals) across a mesh surface:

  • Shade Smooth: In Object Mode, right-click the mesh and choose Shade Smooth.
  • Auto Smooth: In Blender 4.1+, add a Smooth by Angle modifier to control vector normal smoothing based on face angles.
  • Smooth Mesh Vectors: In Edit Mode, select vertices, right-click, and choose Smooth Vertices to adjust vertex position vectors directly.
