How to Shade a Mesh Flat in Blender

Shading a mesh flat in Blender renders every polygon face with a uniform color and lighting, giving the 3D model a faceted, low-poly aesthetic. This guide provides a quick, step-by-step breakdown of how to apply flat shading to an entire object in Object Mode, as well as how to shade specific individual faces in Edit Mode.

Shading an Entire Object Flat (Object Mode)

To apply flat shading to your entire 3D model at once:

  1. Select the Object: Left-click your mesh in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Open the Context Menu: Right-click anywhere in the 3D Viewport.
  3. Apply Flat Shading: Select Shade Flat from the dropdown menu.

Alternatively, you can select your object, click on the Object menu in the top-left corner of the 3D Viewport header, and select Shade Flat.

Shading Specific Faces Flat (Edit Mode)

If you only want certain parts of your mesh to appear flat while keeping other areas smooth:

  1. Enter Edit Mode: Select your object and press Tab.
  2. Switch to Face Select Mode: Press 3 on your keyboard (above the letter keys) or click the Face Select icon in the top-left viewport header.
  3. Select the Target Faces: Left-click to select individual faces, or hold Shift to select multiple faces.
  4. Apply Flat Shading: Right-click in the Viewport and select Shade Flat, or click the Face menu in the top header and select Shade Flat.

Reverting to Smooth Shading

To undo flat shading and restore smooth curves to your mesh:

  • For the entire object: In Object Mode, right-click the mesh and select Shade Smooth.
  • For selected faces: In Edit Mode, select the target faces, right-click, and select Shade Smooth.
